Author Challenge for any BugModular users - Radiophonic

BugBrand

Partly inspired by Radams' recent 1964 sound-clip and by the fact that my local Microplex, the Cube Cinema, will be holding a Radiophonic Workshop weekend at the start of April...

Here's a challenge - make a short recording primarily using your BugModular setup and inspired by the work of the Radiophonic Workshop.

[Let's suggest a max time of 3 or 4 minutes? or how about making several jingles - like the little radio idents they used to make?]

I'll then pass the tracks on to the Cube and they can be played throughout the weekend (or something like that).

Hit me!

I might try and get down for some of that event actually.

I saw something similar at the Royal Festival Hall a few years back.

Plus I'm currently reading Special Sound: The Creation and Legacy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop by Louis Niebur

sandyb

It's peanut butter jelly time!

guess what i'm doing this weekend!

BugBrand

Cooooool!

Preliminary details are already up on the Cube Website:
http://www.cubecinema.com/cgi-bin/diary/programme.pl?days=92#5656

I'll update when more is confirmed
(working on getting some interesting people involved!)

indexofmetals

Definitely up for this. everything I do with the bugbrand is inspired by 60's Radiophonic Workshop.

KNYST

Cool! I'll try to make something too.

darenager

I'm in thumbs up

And I'm really looking foreward to hearing everyones contributions, great stuff hihi

Maybe it would be good to stick all the tracks up on a soundcloud page - fancy setting up a SC bug group?

w00t screaming goo yo SlayerBadger!

BugBrand

Yes, I'll look into SC groups - haven't investigated yet.

I was listening to one of the Radiophonic Workshop Retrospective CDs this morning - so amazing - reckon I'll have a play later with such things in mind.

sandyb

here's a couple of quick things i did. all bugbrand except a cyndustries quad bandpass filter.

more to come.

radio bugs 1

radio bugs 2

a100user

A quick single pass trying to get the early 60's feel and not nailing it seriously, i just don't get it

Nice sounds Sandy

BugBrand

Nice work guys!
Keep 'em coming!

My trials over last weekend didn't really go to plan. Nothing to post as yet..

a100user

That's my problem too Tom,

I even cheated and had a couple of refernce CD's to refer to; Dr Who Vol 1 Early years and BBC Radiophonic Music.

My plan is still to submit something Sci Fi 'esc but also something along the lines of the jingles and TV theme material they used to do.

dan_p

Hi guys, will try to listen to your posts today. I haven't had time to start this either!! only time I have had has been with some new gear that turned up yesterday (KV-100) but even then I was too guilty about not working I didn't spend too long on it. quick play whilst having breakfast this morning but I'm away for a couple of days tomorrow and weekend looking busy. I need to become a Modular hermit and shut the world away.....

I haven't got anything Radiophonic to reference and I am struggling (mainly due to time, to find anything decent on the web, particularly about the jingles) Does anyone have any decent links they can share? There was a great documentary about Delia D on radio 4 last year too, would be great to find a recording of that.

Thanks

sandyb

the delia derbyshire radio 4 documentary is up on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/user/straypixel

some other good stuff there too!

also the tone generation series is worth listening to for similar sorts of sounds. they're downloadable here:

dan_p

Thanks Sandy thumbs up

Just listened to the sounds guys, both brilliant applause

David, you did nail the vibe dude.

I need to pull my finger out.

Arlaharen

Since my setup is rather limited this is what I came up with:

Sound by:
Bugbrand Modular
B&K 1612
Reverb

richard

Brüel & Kjær 1612 band-pass filter.
Unfortunately they are rather hard to come by since they were made in the 1960-70s. It's a real beast at about 17kg.

KNYST

Nice track!

gotta love 17kg gear! lol
It sure is a cool filter (have tested it once)

a100user

Thanks for the links Sandy and thumbs up Dan.

Arlaharen, that is one mean filter and Generator is great.

applause they were both really good david. you captured the essence well i thought.

Arlaharen

nice sounds smile i am very jealous of your 1612.

i was messing around with something involving touchplates, delay and wavefolder tonight. i'll try to post it at the weekend.

KNYST

sandyb: that first one is yummy
a100user: cool

love to hear these as they pop up. hope to make something soon smile

Arlaharen

Thanks, though I think I missed the mark on the radiophonics style.
Both sandyb and a100user are better examples. applause
