Recommend some new (not nu!) metal

I used to listen to a lot of metal when I was younger but stopped.

I'm getting back into it and keen to hear what's good post circa 2008.

To give an idea of the differing styles I'm after, here are some bands I like:

I'm enjoying Obscure Sphinx quite a bit. They're on Bandcamp. Their new album is good, but last year's Void Mother is a masterpiece. A rare case of a band with a female vocalist that doesn't sound like it's constantly trying to shake off childhood dreams of becoming Britney Spears.

Haven't heard much metal from 2016 yet, but I like Derrière Nous, La Lumière from Throane a good bit, heavy, bleak stuff.

True Widow are my one real metal love for the last few years (actually this one album - Circumambulation is), the new one I find doesn't hit the same spots for me.

Lovely chunky riff and plenty of sludge, it's probably technically more like shoegaze metal or something stupid like that but it'll does me just fine thanks.

If you like Krallice, check out Mick Barr's other stuff: Orthrelm, Octis, Crom Tech to name a few

As you mentioned Sunn 0))), check out Asva if you don't know them already, particularly the album What You Don't Know Is Frontier - absolute masterpiece of glacial doom imo.

Fuck yeah, The Body. Check out I Shall Die Here, which is a production/collab thing with Bobby Krlic of The Haxan Cloak. Droney horror music, with lots of synth. Very cool, though not as straightforwardly metal as their other (really good) stuff. There's also a really excellent vimeo video of them performing a set. Seek it; you will not be disappointed. Soooooo heavy.

If you like sludge with a sci fi edge, check out Slomatics' Estron. And if you like doom at all, Windhand will rock your shit.

If you want to really bang your head, Black Breath is awesome.

And I must, must rep Sutekh Hexen, for black metal noise loop density. The first track on Behind the Throne is so intense.

I'm in the same boat, expanding my music across the board really, but I've been listening to a bit of metal...

The new Black Tusk that came out this year is pretty killer.

Also, a buddy of mine runs a label that specializes in heavy/experimental music, mostly of the metal variety. Lots of good/interesting stuff on there, for sure!

Haven't seen them live but the Body roll fucking hard.

Surprised that no one has mentioned Deafheaven, a local favorite in my parts, though for whatever reason the homophobic/fascist shitheads that make up some of the global metal scene like to refer to them as f*g-metal. They have post-rock elements in their instrumentals.

Barn Owl - Were local until they made the move to Brooklyn, excellent stoner-drone-doom-ambient that varies dependent on recording and live show, I think I've seen them live four times. Great use of electronics in their later stuff.

Kowloon Walled City - Another local act, one of my favorites
