A performance I did last night. 100% modular.
Visuals are a Dave Jones MVIP processing a video collage I made.
First time trying to do visuals at all, and working with a system I had made a lot of changes to recently. It still came out alright though.
You can see me looking over my shoulder frequently, trying to figure out what the hell is going on with the visuals.
I need to invest in a small lcd monitor to put in front of me I think.

Thanks!

I sampled a recording I had made of a train into Modcan CV Record, Phonogene and Tyme Sefari II then triggered the playback and modulation with a couple of the trogotronic m 11 modules. So that makes up the majority of it with the vocal sounds coming in further in from tape loops.

Was surprised so many samplers were used. Thought I only heard one but hearing the track again it makes sense. probably that's why it sounded fresh to my ears cos though i like bleeps and bloops, the ears do gets a bit numb after too much of it in the modular synth world.

I'm not a synths dealer and I'm not aware of an inexpensive Synthi secret market, please don't ask me if I know one for sale.
I don't offer support of any kind to people attempting to build clones of EMS equipment.

First time out in 35 years,

Post by dsu » Sun Oct 05, 2014 3:35 pm

Got to play an ambient jam for Nuite Blanche in Toronto last night. First time doing a live gig with the modular since the 70's.

I was playing with a guitarist and a multi-instrumentalist (Koto, sitar, drone loops on laptops, drums etc)

Both the Euro and the Synthi where routed into the Mac, which sent a single stereo mix to the house. Ableton provide a midi control CV source for the Euro. In addition the Beat step was used as a step sequencer for the Euro.

Got to experiment with creating both midi and audio loops. Given the ambient nature of the music, beat syncing was not an issue. Some times I would just randomly lengthen a loop to make "less" loopy.

One of the hardest things is tuning. Since every one in awhile the fundamental of the drone would be changed.

You can see one of the two speakers for the performance. Not the optimal location from my perspective so I spent a lot of time on head phones.

i used to think modulars live was too little predictability for my taste, but in the last year we've done three modular gigs and i don't want to prepare any music at all for gigs anymore, just see where the machines want to go :hihi:

Took the eurorack system out for the first time last week, along with Octatrack for drums, looping and sequencing and QuNexus for playing some parts live.

I had a few tuning issues but I think they're related to a module that I just found out isn't properly buffered. I also accidentally filtered out the bass on the entire last track  . At the time I thought it was an issue with the sound at the venue but in my dumb panic I forgot to look down at the GIANT FADER on the Octatrack to see what was actually happening (tried correcting it in my recording but it's still a little hollow). Lots of timing mistakes etc and things are a bit sparse but all in all it was an awesome experience. I learned a ton during both preparation and performance.

Anyways, here's 20 minutes of sparse, spooky, dancy music (player just shows first song but it's a playlist of 5):

Improvised collaboration with Jef D (aka Dweomer). First time using my modular with another musician. Jef performed with an Octave Cat while I had the modular, Tama TS-305, a feedback loop and a contact mic running through a mess of effects.

Recorded by revoltcrews/{ Sunfalls } at the Lovecraft Bar.
