Peter Gabriel...

Post by onthebandwagon » Fri Jun 19, 2020 7:27 pm

was the best prog rocker gone solo, not considering Eno, but even still. maybe.

Not drunk yet but working on it.

Just watched a documentary about the making of “So”. Really enjoyed it and lots of great Daniel Lanois bits in there too.

Yep. No question. He'll always be the weirdo from Genesis to me, but by God his pop career was a... *wait for it* ...sledgehammer.

I don't really count Eno in with the prog crowd, really. More just his own brand of experimental weirdo who happened to pal around and collaborate with some actual proggers.

I clicked here to say “ ... is not cool enough for Dolly Parton”. Too funny.

Great doc- highly recommend it.

Gained appreciation for Peter Gabriel only very recently. Cool vibe going on there... 😎 His early use of the Fairlight speaks a lot to his creativity.

His New Blood album and video (on iTunes and elsewhere I am sure) is definitely worth a visit. It is a real delight to see selected works of his receiving the full orchestra treatment.

The album with the melted face cover is my all time favorite.

The album I’ve actually had the longest relationship with was his soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ. That, his very pop stuff and his early solo albums are all satisfying to me in different ways. A couple of the early ones are also available with his German vocals for anyone who might be interested.

Yes! Hard to believe it's from 1980 really. Sounds like nothing else from the time.

Also, I know it's cheesy, but I could listen to the line "tact - tact - contact" from I Have the Touch on loop forever.

Thanks so much for this! Two in and guffawed several times, woke my wife up a few times.

Peter Gabriel’s voice is neither particularly distinct or for that matter lacking in character, perhaps that’s why it works across his vast catalogue.

The album which - completely by accident - gave us the gated reverb drum sound that dominated the '80s...

It may stop, but it never ends.

Should also be mentioned that those early albums didn’t use any high hat. Innovation by omission.

The fourth album is why I'm here. Up to that point I just assumed what I heard on ToTP was how music was supposed to sound.

Also, despite the excellent Brian Pern joke about inventing world music, there is the small matter of WOMAD and the Real World studios to add to the contributions made with his own music. That's one hell of a legacy.

Prescience, he was late to the gestalt but predicted the accessibility here.

One of my all time favorite artists. He's up there with Bowie, just in a different direction.

Slightly offtopic, but I'd like to add another Peter to that list - Hammill (of course ;)).
... why buy it for $100 when you can build it yourself for $150?
