Live Shows in 2016

Post by rezzn8r » Sat Dec 03, 2016 11:13 am

2015 was a dismal year for me in terms of live shows, as I didn't get out to see a single concert that year. I really enjoy live acts, so that made me a little sad. At the start of 2016 I made a resolution to get out for more live music. Here is a list of what I managed to take in this year;

Boris, Sunn 0))), Sleep @ The Mohawk, Austin TX
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard @ The Velvet Underground, Toronto ON
Black Mountain @ Lee's Palace, Toronto ON
Boris @ Lee's Palace, Toronto ON
The Brian Jonestown Massacre @ The Danforth Music Hall, Toronto ON
Bob Log III - The Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto ON
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Glitter Wizard @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
The Mattson II @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
White Fence @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Wand @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Thee Oh Sees @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
The Black Angels @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Dead Meadow @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Pond @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Godspeed You! Black Emperor @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Meatbodies @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
The Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Desert Daze, Joshua Tree CA
Thee Oh Sees @ The Danforth Music Hall

I plan on trying to make it out to see Holy Fuck on December 14th, and then that will probably be it for the year. Definitely an improvement over 2015.

I think the best show I saw this year was The Oh Sees' set at Desert Daze. That was a peak experience for me. The hairs on my arms still stand up when I think about it.
:omg:

So how 'bout y'all? What did you see in 2016?

Great shows this year :

Swans in Paris
Stars of the Lid in Brussels
Dj Harvey in London
Alessandro Cortini in Paris
SHXCXCHCXSH in Brest
The Horrorist in Rennes

I'm sorry I missed Alessandro Cortini when he came to Toronto this year. I saw him a few years back when he did a quadraphonic Buchla set in The Underground at The Drake Hotel. The four speakers were placed in the corners and the Cortini was set up in the middle of the room. I got a little dizzy walking around in circles that night, because it sounded so cool moving around the room.

I was fortunate enough to see Alessandro Cortini and Suzanne Ciani when they both performed at Machines in Music in Brooklyn in October. I have known Suzanne's work for years and I'd seen a couple of videos of Alessandro performing with Don Buchla.. It was a great experience to see them both in a close, great vibey place like the Knockdown Center. That's it for me so far this year but it was a good one. (I didn't catch Verbos' set.. had to get moving along at that point as it was getting late for this old guy!)... peace.

I saw plenty of good shows this year--Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Autolux, etc.

But LCD Soundsystem's first "coming out of retirement" show was the most memorable. The floor was waving with all of the bodies bouncing.

I was pretty disappointed that I didn't get to see her in Austin when I went down for Levitation.

Not a show in the traditional sense but adding to my list some of the people I got to see play at the Berghain this weekend : Cristian Vogel (ambient set with some modular), Black Madonna b2b Nobu, Blawan, Surgeon, Marcel Dettmann... etc... That sound system is beyond words. The Berghain is beyond words really.

I caught her at the Brooklyn show. Great stuff. I can't believe my favorite venue is a place named "Baby's All Right" haha... also saw Bill Callahan there and had a great time at the GOGGS (Ty Segall project) show. I think I moshed? :guinness: :guinness: :nana:

Might've been the best year for me for concerts:

Morrissey @ Louisville Palace Theater
Wild Nothing/Whitney/Charlie Hilton @ Thalia Hall (Chicago)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ Bluebird Nightclub (Bloomington, IN)
