the Thomas Henry MPS looks dope - still no good demos of this - but sick features:

Also - i always thought the Mutant Kick/ Mutant Snare/and VCNO by Hex Inverter would make a ridiculous drum combo:

they have more features than the ND3 - so - i guess everyone's holding onto them ND3 is a step down - synthesis wise.

AFAIK, the ND3 has two more FM algos than the ND3 and also attack control for noise - a big plus - which the ND3 doesn't. OTOH, for live usage the ND3 with delay and reverb could be more useful. I guess a lot of the appeal of the ND2 is also its size. I haven't used an ND2 but the ND3 sounds absolutely stellar! No attack control but with some external CC modulation some very unique mono synth lines can be had out of it. I have a Nord G2, which is obviously a very different beast and far far more flexible, but the "core" sound of the ND3 - e.g. basic waveforms is definitely a step up.

I recently wrote to Nord enquiring whether they will "continue with the Nord Drum line." Unsurprisingly they didn't answer

Ah yeah, had my eye on those. My impression of that maker is stuff that is overpriced and flimsy. Fair or no?

edit: sorry missed the part about "modular" so scratch off ND2 and tanzbar and digitone. was thinking more just "whacky"

i have made lots of incredible tuned percussion on the elektron digitone. it's a great drum machine.

lorre mill double knot... i have the V1... plays great with CL gear. it's a very "simple" voice but it has a special sound. the envelopes might be the punchiest envelopes i've heard, and the raw sound of the oscillators just sounds different then other synths. loves a plumbutter methinks. very cool shift register sequency thing. haven't tried V2... have almost pulled the trigger on a mosstone a buncha times.

ND2 fasho. the sounds are amazing. the interface is a drag IMO/E, and i sold it, but i often wish it was still around (really yummy plasticy sounds).

Bugbrand DRM1, hard to find. the DRM2 i don't have, but it is more of a traditional subtractive voice. the DRM1 was a unique, additive approach to drum synthesis. i have 2x.

MFB tanzbar 2. overlooked drum machine. very good sound, and randomly one of the best 303 clones i've heard (the "bass synth" part). built well, lots of outputs, soaks up distortion n other fx really well, authentic 909/808 type of sounds and more, even loads samples, great form factor, bit obtuse to use but not bad once you're used to it (it's mostly about deciphering the manual tbh).

great feature for those looking for a good reason to move away from writing drum tracks on the DAW. you lost me at obtuse to use though haha.

Always enjoyed playing the Moog 1130 percussion controllers. Triggering a modular there is not much you can't do with those. Anything from monster kicks, to laser effects are possible.

Here is a short video of a pair of 1130 controllers.

Another short video with the 1130 advancing a sequencer with Simmons SDSV.

Sure. But the right kind of input can make a HUGE difference in how the actual synth part gets used. For a really good example, look up the Electronic Peasant's new ThunderWave DIY drum controller. Here at MW and online at EP's site. Pressure position, etc. It's a tour de force in extreme, and of what to pair with any drum sound making modules.

oh boy - do i know about the thuderwave.. insane build...every build he does is absolutely awe inspiring!
i didnt know drum membrane position was in any way an influence to those kind of triggers.
i stand corrected CZ Rider!

it's more the manual. once you figure it out it's fine. the bass synth is sequenced 303 style, that can definitely be offputting to many. the manual is a terrible direct translation...

also fwiw the sample section is pretty lo-fi overall so i dunno if it would straight up replace a DAW! but the analog filters are awesome.

Matter 1 was kind of weird with those super small dupont cables, but Matter 2 uses 2mm Banana Pins for their patching, what feels much better.

I cant really speak for other folktek products, bit i am very happy with my Matter 2 since i got it (last year)

Another vote for the BugBrand DRM2, here. It just sounds better than most things I synthesize out of the box and benefits from that hifi BugBrand sheen. You can tell the difference between my patches that have the DRM2 and those that don't pretty readily.

DRM2 wasn't patched to be the star here, but it's making the insistent kick and snare, and I think it just sounds fabulous:

A DRM2 through a BugBrand PTDelay that's modulated by a sequencer is insanely enjoyable:

i still hope to get a :bugbrand: DRM2 one of these days (i  DRM1)!

over in eurorack, the Rossum Electromusic Assimil8or can be a very capable sample-based drum synthesizer.

cheers
