Interface w/ 2 ADAT for ES3s? Or...ES8+ES3?

Post by nrvana8775 » Fri Dec 02, 2016 1:37 am

Hey, I currently run two ES3s with a Fireface800. I would like to switch to using a hardware mixer, so I no longer need the FF800.

Was wondering if there are any smaller/cheaper interfaces I could use to run the two ES3s, i.e something with two ADAT outputs. I know the 8CV exists, but it's a pain in the ass to use with Logic, and I got an ES3 for now much more than the 8cv cost :)

I was also wondering about the viability of using something like an ES8 connected to an ES3. Price-wise, it'd be more expensive than what I paid for two ES3, but it would negate the need for an ADAT-only interface. Is the USB as fast/reliable as the ADAT over firewire?

On a separate note:

If I did ES8 + ES3, how would I go about setting that up? Just connect ADAT out from ES8 into ADAT in of ES3? All of the outputs would show up in ableton as extensions of the ES8?

The audio latency would be the same as an ES3 system, right - since everything is sample accurate?

Dual-ADAT interfaces are generally towards the high end of the range - I don't know of any low-cost interfaces with two ADATs.

Faster - the ES-8 will run at 96kHz.

Yes.

The latency would be different - that would be down to the difference between RME's drivers and Apple's. But it would still be sample accurate.

Would there be any benefit/difference between an ES8 + ES3 and an ES3+8CV? Just the speed of firewire vs usb?

The ES-3 runs at up to 48kHz/24 bit. The ESX-8CV does 12 bit at a lower sample rate.

The ES-3 (or ES-8) is also a lot easier to use than the ESX-8CV in terms of the plug-in routing.

I use an M-Audio LightBridge as an interface for two ES3s.
Not made anymore but not too hard (or expensive) to find.
