fairlight mfx3

Post by vmgas » Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:21 pm

my roommate got this for some reason without doing much research on what it actually is..this would actually be his 3rd impulse purchase i have witnessed him do of equipment that he has no knowledge of..watching him excitingly tear open the package and then realize minutes later he cant do anything with it

from what i can tell all he needs is a monitor and it can be up and running
is this correct?
what kind of interface would he need to record with it?
and this is just a DAW too correct? he kept telling me how he saw videos of peter gabriel using it which i just watched and its not even the same system, i guess he thought this was the same as the CMI series

Haha. Buyer beware! It's a 24 track hard disk recorder, and that's about it.

i do not understand how a person can drop money on gear when they have no grasp of what they are actually buying

It's an amazing editor. It was very popular for editing dialog and foley because it was so fast to operate. It sounded incredible, blew away Pro Tools at the time. No mixing except level up and down, it's just a recorder. I think there was a way to run the CMI on it but you would need some cards for it that are surely no longer available.

I'll give you :75:

Sorry, but the MFX3 isn't CMI-compatible (tho earlier versions are)...third para after "Unique" heading in this story

The MFX3 is a great machine. Sounds fabulous. The Plus version is 24 bit.
The earlier MFX2 is the 16 channel CMI 3 basically. It can run either hard disk stuff or CMI stuff..
It is the fastest machine to crossfade on (the MFX3) and edit.
Mine had 24 analog and digital I/O. Not all have 24 analog i/o
It it has the remote then you just need a screen to get it going.

So as mentioned above me, it's a 24 track, and a great one.
Getting appreciated again I think.
