Fred's Lab Töörö on Kickstarter

Post by marzacdev » Sat Oct 24, 2020 8:26 am

Hi to everyone at Muff Wiggler,

this is Fred from Fred's Lab and I am here to present you my new beast, the Töörö synth.

The Töörö is a very characterful 6-voice 4-part polysynth. It offers dual 12-bit wavetable oscillators per voice, through-zero FM synthesis, ring modulation and auto-sync. Modulation is provided by dual audio-rate LFOs, dual AHDSR envelope generators, and there is a global stereo delay / chorus. Each voice has its own FL A847 analog lowpass filter, which is a brand new design, based on opto-couplers. In addition, a digital shaper can be used to change the sound pre-filter.

Here is the link to the running Kickstarter campaign:

I stay available for all your remarks and questions.

Have a great weekend,
Fred.

I backed this.
Love that it's multitimbral, has dedicated outputs, a sound that is obviously unique just from hearing the demos, and an excellent form factor. I can figure out how to use 90% of the features just by looking at the front panel-- good design.
Oh, and the price is right?!? as in, ridiculously low for the feature set.

Would be great if other folks could back this and help Fred reach the funding goal. I think this will be a workhorse synth for many.

I did too. My first jump into a kickstarter.

I wish for a headphone jack.

oh, i'm bad. I love the way these look and the form factor. I just order the buzzzy. The 3 'z's was the deciding factor

I have a Buzzy and so backing this project was a no brainier for me.
I'm looking for nothing at this moment in time

Small, inexpensive and a nice sounding unit.

Thank you for your support guys.

I know about the headphone plug. It was actually in the rev3 of the design but I had to discarded it as I could not fit a stereo pot in the new housing (was wood before) while keeping the unit small footprint. It had also an impact on the current consumption and the instrument must be compatible USB 2.0 = 500mA max. So it is a compromise.

Nelson Baboon => I guess I registered your payment for the Buzzzy!, dispatch will be tomorrow.

Understood. It is not a deal breaker for me as I'm still in! Best of luck with the campaign (a campaign I can get excited about).

thank you for designing a very cool looking synth!
i was wondering, could it be possible to reroute the voices directly to the individual outs, and have the main outs *only* contain the fx? so then we have dedicated outs for each part as well as global fx.

Or no pot for the stereo output? A TRS cable for the main output instead of 2 mono and a mini jack "rec" output without volume control...

Just thinking since I'll be using the bluebox for mixing when it will come. So all minijack would be handy.

If we could reroute how we want the signal to the 2 small jack. Like could switch between voice 1/2 and main wet or dry...

Anyway not a big issue at all. I already have plenty of 2 mono to mini jack cables....

To answer about the routing options, the idea behind the Töörö was to make an affordable and compact poly.

Inside, there are discrete analog filters (no CEM or whatever CoolAudio IC) and stereo DCA (6 of them!) in a PCB which is 142mm x 88mm. All sound parameters are digitally controlled and can therefore be saved and recalled. Please trust me on this, there is NO free space on the board, everything is tightly packed, the 4-layers are heavily used, and any kind of "routing option" would require way more real-estate :-)

That's also why I can keep the cost of this machine relatively low compared to other offerings, it is in the end highly optimized in terms of architecture simplicity.

Hi and thank you again for your support.
70 backers have now pledged to the project and I feel really happy that you guys are having interest in my work.
I really put a lot of effort and passion to create and produce these machines.

There are now only 10 days to go and the project is funded by 60%, it starts to be tough but far from impossible. I try my best to produce some additional audio and video content to convince you and maybe you have good ideas. Do not want to create pity here but Fred's Lab really rely on these crowdfunding campaigns to release its instruments. And many musicians and particularly synthesists are not even aware that my company exist.

Please help to spread the word ;-)
Have a great day!

Here is a new video where I demo the oscillator section of the machine.

Filter and shapers come next. ;)

Hi,

Do you have any links for demos of chords, keys and pads? I may have missed this in what you have posted already. I would prefer not in a song/track so it’s easy to hear it’s sound/texture.

Sounding great already and I’m personally very close to backing this!

There are soundcloud links for pad chords and other examples on the kickstarter page.

I was wondering the same, maybe some nice user case examples would pull the trigger. I mean poly in such a small device in this pricerange should have some good examples to show the strength. Some warm pads, dubby chords and don't forget a vangelis patch. Talking about usercases, is this something I would take along live or more for the small homestudio? I usually buy gear more from good examples than from specs and clinical demos...

Three percussion sounds and the voices left are nice for those keen on chords for their dubby bass lines....and the UI is stage proof.
Instant buy if I gonna find some cash in my pockets!
