What is a midi interface

Post by vqlk » Sat Jun 13, 2020 8:12 pm

Especially, would any of them record sequences from a PC, and if so can the sequence be cv triggered?

An interface is just a way to get MIDI information into and out of your computer. Since it often has multiple ins and outs it can route to more devices and avoid some latency issues that come with linking devices using MIDI thru. It does not record but can feed MIDI information into your DAW which can record it.

Are you asking if you can send a sequence from your computer to your modular? Or the opposite way round?

If you wanted to send a sequence from your PC to your modular then an interface would assist this However, you would still need a module to assist this.
Doepfer do a relatively cheap one. A-190-2. There’s tons of others out there
Expert sleepers also enhanced versions of it. I don’t own one but I believe the ES8 audio interface is good. This would then allow for the sequence on your PC to be triggered in your Modular land.
Anyone chime in if I’m incorrect.

i was hoping to send midi to my modular, but clock the midi sequence with CV. i do not know why that would be at all impossible... even if you need two cables :D

i also wondered if any midi interfaces would record from a pc, so that i don't need to run a computer while converting its midi out to cv.

I’m not aware of any interfaces that record without a PC.

Just to try and clear things. This is a midi interface (the one I use)

This is also a midi interface

This connects to the interface above to talk to the computer, whist at the same time also talks to the modular setup. Does this make sense?

I'm not sure if it's what you mean, but Arturia beatstep pro can save (short) MIDI sequences from a PC, send them over CV or MIDI in standalone mode, and is also clockable via CV.

You may want to consider a CV to MIDI interface, or a DC coupled audio interface, used in conjunction with a DAW like Ableton Live. You can trigger clips and sequences in Ableton Live In real time using CV and gate/trigger produced by your modular.
Disappointment with any module is usually a failure of imagination.

a loose reference

A pattern may be up to 64 steps and you can have 16 projects that contain up to 16 scenes each allowing you to chain up to 16 patterns for each of the 3 sequencer tracks.
So a scene can be a chain of up to 1024 steps, and your project can have 16 of them - not a 'song mode' as such, but plenty of patterns to jam around with within a single project

cool.
3 sequencer tracks
does each track have gate cv and velocity? the lpwz tram 8 would then combine with the beatstep pro for for an 8 midi to cv sequence of up to 1024 steps? i mean, sorry i'm new to this :guinness:

1 sequencer track is a drum track so just has 8 gate outs, the other two are monophonic with gate, velocity and pitch

So, if you want to record MIDI then play it back clocked this may do the trick - if you can understand it. It'll probably make coffee too...
I think your thread title is somewhat misleading, hence some of the replies.
I'm not buying a maths though, not my idea of fun...

Why “transfer” MIDI from a computer to some gear to have that play it back?
Why not go straight to a hardware MIDI Sequencer and work from there?

Gus Gus used to write songs in Logic, then export the MIDI files, import them onto an Akai MPC 2000XL which was then used to play the MIDI/Sequences live (yielding a tighter master clock)

It was more frequent in the 80s; using a sequencer to capture a performance, then bouncing it over to another sequencer (the keyboard player from Toto used to do that a lot)

If you want to use a PC as a MIDI sequencer, that’s a whole other thing.
I would really recommend against using USB for MIDI, FireWire and PCI (older Serial is best) are all far better and more stable+accurate.

MPC is the answer.
