Dave Smith hints at Sequential Prophet 5 Rev4/Prophet 10

Post by Analog Prophet » Sat Apr 04, 2020 1:48 pm

At 0.40 Dave Smith hint of a new synth coming up, shipping in August as “my gift back to you”. Wonder, of course, what it could be? A coincidence to the celebration of his 70th birthday?

this would be cool...but I´m still waiting for something with user samples and analog filters, but less "keyboardist-oriented" than the PX

anyway, I think he need something cheaper in the way of the mopho X4, and I think what you said would be something that could work if released with a sub-1000 price tag

There is a possible clue that it's about the same size as the Pro3 given the space he pointed to.

What I hope for is a ReIssue of Prophet 5 but I guess it will never happen (I have a Prophet 6 - close but not the same as a P5 ReIssue).

I’m thinking (and hoping) the logical next step would be a Poly version of the Pro 3, maybe a Pro 16? Rev2 style with splits and layers. Nothing much crazier than that. Would be a convenient way to update the P6/OB6 platform and add something new to the lineup. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Is there really a market / "need" for that?

I'd love to know (not to make fun of them or anything but just for fun) how many units they move of these DSI synths.

To someone who has never owned a DSI synth, they basically have the Prophet and the Evolver, and then a nearly infinite stream of different (and successively improving mixes of those two. I have to admit the Pro-2 and now Pro-3 are pretty damn cool but I guess since I don't really care for the Curtis Filter, it just seems like more of the brash brassy tones that work in a Rock Band context, which is not something that I do. Maybe there are more small rockbands who have a keyboardist who needs a "cut through" synth, that's just not me which is why I am perplexed by DSI's constantly changing lineup.

Many of their recent releases don't have Curtis filters, and all quite different from each other too:

Pro 2
Prophet 6
OB 6
Prophet X
Pro 3
And Pioneer SP-16 / Toraiz AS-1

I don’t think there’s a market need for every new but not new guitar that comes out every year but so they come. Looking at Dave’s pro line up you have

MONO
Pro 3 /SE

POLY
Rev2 8v KB/Module
Rev2 16v KB/Module
P6 KB/Module
OB6 KB/Module
PX / XL
Prophet 12 Module
Tempest

Most notably they’re missing Monos in their lineup. But if you’re wanting a Sequential brand VCO Poly with more than 6 voices and or 61 keys you’re out of luck. Rev 2 has the voices, modulation, 61 keys, but DCOs and CEM filter. The Prophet XL and 12 are Digital mostly. And the Tempest is a drum machine first and foremost. Therefore a Pro 8/16 would make sense. You’d get a 8/16 voice VCO poly with 3 Discrete Filters, split/layer, all of Daves modern goodies including mod matrix, killer sequencer, effects etc. and you’d get a digital engine too. So a mix of everything except the samples of the PX. Desktop or 61 keys. Sounds good to me. That pretty much would be the synth I’ve been hoping for from Sequential.

Yeah they need to do a poly with the raw tone of the prophet 6 or ob6 but the modulation capabilities of the Rev2!! Maybe 8 voices, 2x 3340 VCO per voice, serial 2140 / 3320 filters? Would love to have the 3320 in a poly.

He said in the NAMM videos that it would be something easier to design so it’s not going to be some elaborate poly synth.

Dave knows that he disappointed me with the launch of the Pro-3 instead of the Pro-X that I wanted ... but he also knows that if he builds it now, I´ll personally bring him a bottle of Tears of Llorona No. 3

Positive reinforcement rather than punishment worked best with gear manufacturers. I think we have to apply this to Roland in a massive scale to avoid the next Aira MIDI-equiped melodica

Pro-3 has been my first Sequential / DSI product and I’m very pleased with it. If this lineage continues I’ll grip whatever comes next for sure.

What he really needs to do is allow the user to decide how many voices they want to use when it comes to splits. If I’m using just one voice for a bass I should be able to play with 7/15 voices as I see fit. That’s one thing I love about the Moog One. Otherwise it’s such a waste of all that
Polyphony.

True, I forgot about the OB-6 / Prophet 6 generation. Those are cool.

I can deal with something like this
They should work the UI far from what they delivered in the Tempest...the potential of it was great but the whole machine was a PITA to use and the synthesis resources wasily wasted by how you have to use it
