One what?

And why not more than one if the total cost is still under $3000?

Because you can only have one in this hypothetical scenario.

My Moog Model D Reissue. Before I owned one I used to play one in a live improv act and just vibed with it. I’m always surprised by its range of sound. And it NEVER sounds lame.

Yamaha CS-50 is a close one but i don’t ever want to lug one around again.

Well, Alesis Ion. Since it’s the best synth ever made. Great sound, full featured, easy to work with and a looker too. :sstorm:
New modular track! My first in six months. Messy and unglued.

Yeah, do that! I was kidding a bit about the looks of it (I love the looks but I get why others wouldn’t) but I’m serious about the rest. I’ve used many of the classics and quite some modern synths but the Ion is the greatest.

Here’s a track with all of the sounds from my Ion (delay and reverb added in post):

Andromeda A6, it's special.

Moog Model D reissue a close second.
Where have I seen you before?
Same place you saw me, I expect.
I've got a good face for memories.

Nord Wave or Roland V-Synth.
As much as I love analog synths, loading my own samples as oscillators gives me the most flexibility. The Prophet X could be up there, but I've never played one so I don't know.

KORG Kross

Sequence whatever you like. Record full tracks. Lots of sonic power, if you're willing to dive a bit. Decent effects (OK, you have to do some overdubbing to get a full range of possibilities). Mic in, including vocoder options.

For more money, I'd see what Kurzweil had on offer.

My assessment might change if the MPC X's software updates let it be a multitrack recorder as well.
