The Muscarin – experimental semi-modular synthesizer

The Muscarin is an analog music synthesizer with analog and touch controls, that has everything that’s needed for creating music and synthesis of sounds.

Designed by kNoB technology, it is based on cross-modulation technology. It is designed as semi-modular, and can be used by it’s own, or as a part of eurorack system.

It is made for generating standard sounds and sound effects, as well as for extremely changing their sound while playing, converting it to a complex structured noises. It has full manual hands-on controls (switches and knobs), as well as it can be controlled by CV (control voltage).

How does it differ from other synthesizers?

Early Muscarin synthesizers was made only for sound experiments, and could be classified as noise generators, although it always was a powerful instrument, combining additive, subtractive, FM and Cross-modulation synthesis. Later it was decided to fully reconsider the concept of Muscarin, to widen its range of use, adding new functions, without limiting its noise abilities, and making it more universal and flexible. With this purpose it was designed as 3u eurorack, and has a lot of inputs and outputs.

Muscarin is able to generate bass, lead, piano, organ, violin sounds. But it’s major difference is cross-modulation, which helps to create complex, multifactorial noises and noise effects, as well as lo-fi drum and percussion sounds.

Technical specifications:

- Muscarin core - 4x VCO based on square wave, cross-modulation control "Bias", control by CV full range linear or 1v \ oct (4 octave range; 32-500 + Hz)
- LFO is a low frequency oscillator, has two waveforms square and triangular, CV controlled rate.
- EG AR envelope generator. Can both receive an external gate signal, synchronize with the LFO, and automatically generate an envelope.
- VCF filter \ saturator 12db \ oct, has two modes of cutting high or low frequencies.
- VCA \ Gate-5x, voltage controlled amplifiers. They stand one on each generator before the filter and one on the common output. In their heart are the wactrols. That is very much reflected in the sound. Management of both internal and external sources of CV.

Everyone who loves experimenting with sound, and musicians (composers) who want to add some unique sound forms into their compositions and creations. As well as sound designers, who wants to widen generated sound pallet.

kNoB technology is a micro-company based in Russia, in the City of Kazan, which is engaged in development of unique sound devices since 2015. Noise synthesizers, drone machines, analog sound effects, before now was releasing only unique devices on personal orders, but the positive feedback has pushed us to developing mass production devices. In our work we rely on calculating and love for sound.

We chose to crowdfunding, because we’re unable to start mass production all by ourselves, but we believe that together we can create a unique device at an affordable price. Also, we will be grateful for any help in spreading the info about this project.

Updates on every stage of production will be posted here and on our social media pages.

Risks and challenges.

Nowadays we have a prototype, that has passed lasting tests, and as a result of them a hard work has been done to correct and supplement the circuitry of the device.

The final product will be a little different, better and will have some more additional functions.

We rely on calculations, and if the project will gain sufficient funding, another testing will be provided. Additional testing will last 1 month. By that time all needed components will be already ordered, after the testing печатные платы order will be made. The production will take 1 more month. It will be great if everyone will get their device by Christmas!

If we will raise more funds than we have set as a goal, we are ready to hire some temporary workers, to complete the work earlier.

Interesting.. Needs more demos... Here's a tip: get rid of bright blue and white LEDs!!!! Replace with soft orange/pink/red/purple/green.

Muffs: is there any chance the soundlcoud embedding can be fixed?

The Muscarin reminds me in a LYRA-4, without the delay section.

My questions:

- Cross-Modulation - what exactly is modulated by the amount of Bias (source)?
- Can you tell us more about the "Modular kNoB tech Perk!" - (function, size in HP, ... of the "secret" module...)
- In the videos it seems that the knobs are a bit wobbling - will this be fixed for the final series?
- How thick is the plexiglass panel of the Eurorack module?

- Yes, I think they are somewhat similar. When designing, I was thinking more about the versatility and control.

- Cross modulation or bias - controls core power stability, and controlled by voltage.
With small changes, this is manifested in raising the tone of the generators and sound generation failures.
With large changes, the tonal structure is completely destroyed
And the oscillators are starting to generate noise.
Each in its own way, but it is very important, they influence each other.
It gives great control for the synthesis of the complex structure of the noise.
Also, at any time, you can go back to the clean work of the VCO core.

- "Modular kNoB tech Perk!" - Muscarin synth without case + DragonFLY dual VCF\dual VCA\Mixer 6inputs
DragonFLY our new module - two VCF (based on Parker-Steiner )
Each filter has a mixer section. And 3 inputs for a signal with attenuators
Dual VCA based on lm13700 with a log\linear switch
Dimensions 3U 16 HP Depth 5cm.
Very soon we will present it to the public with a demo.
Added the early sketch of the front panel and structure, but now I add more inputs and switches.

- Are both modules 50 mm in depth? (I use Erica Synths skiff cases - about 41mm is the limit...)

More accurate measurement:
Muscarin without case - depth 25mm (with female connector)
Dragonfly - depth 35mm (with female connector)

Panel design can be discussed and I am always very interested in the opinions of interested people
I have an idea to make it a classic black
With white signatures and windows for light indication
Maybe add graphics

- Black would be fine (I love the simple style of Erica Synths modules - including the black knobs...) - in any case - keep it simple!
- and I would place the LEDs on the panel.
- any idea about the touch sensors?

Yes, the easiest way to make the LEDs in the panel, but I can make the illuminated windows, like a MakeNoise style 0/

In addition, on all devices created by the campaign,
I will make a special drawing on the case.
This can be done directly on the aluminum panel.

The touchpads will change a little, will be added launch for an envelope, but it will definitely be bolts through the panel, this is very tactile

If I can't swing one, is there a way to patch up something similar in eurorack?

Also, how much is shipping to the US and will the power adapter be US compatible?

The synthesizer will definitely be available for order until the end of the campaign, and possibly "in demand"
But now the verification process is in progress.
And indigo tech support does not respond to my request - "How long?!" :mad:

An exemplary design of the aluminum panel, I will prepare only next week.
Since there will be new features. And I will need to approve the final draft.
I will definitely conduct a personal survey with every Becker who wants this option.

Problem solved. Indiegogo accepts payments and everything works.
