Why is there no noise source in the easel?

Post by misa » Thu Sep 17, 2020 5:26 pm

With the 208C making it more obvious, I was wondering if there is a (quirky?) quote by don Buchla about why there never was a noise source in the original Easel?

(You could argue that there *is*, but let’s not get into that, as this is not the “noise” I mean to refer to...)

I’m using the papz VCS3 card for noise, but it’s weird, isn’t it? Didn’t almost every other synth have noise? Why didn’t Don put it in the Easel?

My guess is that portable/keyboard based synthesizers was a new concept and there were no standards at the time, so noise just didn't make the cut. Don had made the 410 Module Cluster and the 212 Dodeca module which both had noise, but were missing oscillators and a sequencer. When comparing the Minimoog, Synthi AKS, and the Easel, they all have their strengths and white noise is not the Easel's :hihi:.

Easy enough fix thru expansion cards - Portabellaz or DIY.

Thank you fuzz for the comparison, your estimate on the why is what I had gathered too, I was wondering if there was a specific reason. (“White noise is made by the devils”? ;))

You're supposed to plug a turntable spinning the label of the record into the external input as a noise source

I think it’s simply a design decision made by Don back in the day. Not everything can make the cut on a portable unit. Look at the easel; where would you put the noise? In place of something else, so what feature or slider or Jack would you get rid of and replace with a noise source? There very well may be something that you would replace for noise, and it probably would be a pretty simple modification if you are so inclined!

I'd guess that as the Easel isn't primarily focussed on subtractive synthesis and has several outputs offering different flavours of triggered random(ish) voltage the two most common use cases for a noise source (feed it to a S/H or chuck it thorough a resonant filter) aren't really in demand on the Easel so it wasn't worth making the space for one.

If you really need noise, the external audio input is right there for you

Because it needs a VCS3 Card.

I'm not a synths dealer and I'm not aware of an inexpensive Synthi secret market, please don't ask me if I know one for sale.

OK. Let me rephrase the question: how did Don Buchla know about the VCS3 card in 1972??

That video led me to incredibly horrible noise! I loved it, and found that similar disastrous effects , perhaps less nuanced, can be obtained far more simply.

This might be a candidate for soldering some resistors into a Papz-provided program card.
