Every SYNTHI needs a Korg SQ-1 step sequencer

Post by papz » Thu Apr 16, 2020 8:50 am

Hi

I'm happy to introduce this new Portabellabz expansion card for the Synthi A and AKS.
The SQ-1 Card adapts the great small Korg SQ-1 sequencer for use with the Synthi.

The card simply plugs directly into the 8 pins Jones "keyboard" socket and is powered by the Synthi, no cables no connector, it's plug and play, easy and hassle free.
For use with a VCS3, the Jones plug can be mounted onto the top side of the PCB but an adapted umbilical cable with swapped connections is requested, the standard cable won't work.

Warning : the card's power consumption is 155mA on the Synthi's +12V power rail, which is too much load for a MK1 PSU.
It should never be plugged into a MK1 unit, this would fry its PSU. I assume no liability in case of problem (anyway, it can be repaired, no worries).
In several MKI units (including my own one) I added an extra PSU to power a KS, it is ok for the SQ-1 Card : http://www.portabellabz.be/images/sq1/M ... pgrade.pdf
Another solution is to power the SQ-1 via its USB port and omit the power circuitry on the card.

Features

All the nice features of the SQ-1 are working with the Synthi : https://www.korg.com/us/products/dj/sq_1/

Scaled CV
The SQ-1's CV outputs A and B are routed respectively to the Synthi's input channel 1 and 2. Thanks to a multiturn trimmer, the CV can be scaled to get equal temperament when the Synthi's input level pot is set to 10, therefore no more tricky adjustment is needed to control the Synthi 1V/oct.
A good working and properly calibrated Synthi tracks in tune over 5 octaves with the SQ-1 Card.

Gate
The Synthi's envelope can be fired by either the SQ-1's A or B gate, a 3-position switch replaces the SQ-1's former "littlebits OUT" :
left is gate A, center is no gate, right is gate B.

CV/Gate interface
When the SQ-1 is turned off, its CV/gate output jack sockets can be used as inputs to control the Synthi with another controller enjoying its equal temperament 1V/oct scaling.

Handle support
Small plates can be mounted to the back to lock the Spartanite case's handle for better stability.
The SQ-1 mounting to the SQ-1 Card is not difficult and can be performed by any person with basic soldering skills and tools.

Control other synths
The SQ1's ins and outs minijack sockets are still working.
The SQ-1 can control other synths together with the Synthi via CV/gate or MIDI and sync with other gear as a slave or as a master via its sync in and out sockets.

The SQ-1 mounting to the SQ-1 Card is not difficult and can be performed by any person with basic soldering skills and tools.

That's a really cool. I'd love to see a video of the scaling process. Even if 1v/oct response proved to not be as easy and stable as I'd hope, this would be a very fun tool. What a cheap/simple way to dampen my KS lust.

Thanks !

The scaling process is really straightforward :
1. set the sequencer CV output A to have the first step outputing 0V, the second 1V, the third 2V etc up to 5V, thanks to the SQ-1's integrated quantizer, it's very easy.
2. turn the input level ch. 1 pot fully CW to 10.
3. patch a pin into row 8 to an oscillator frequency with the vernier dial set to about 4.5 (2k7 1% precision pins should be used for the calibration and play).
4. play the sequence step by step and adjust the trimmer to get 1 octave intervals between each step (the trimmers are accessible on top of the card between the panel and PCB).
5. proceed the same for CV output B with input level ch. 2 pot set fully CW to 10 and the pin in row 9.

The pre-built cards will come calibrated, a slight adjustment may be needed to match the actual Synthi it will be used with.

I don't think a video is needed, do you ? ;)

Sounds great! Now I don't need to find a Synthi AKS, I just need to find a Synthi!

would it not also make sense to build that as a card for the easel ?

Thanks

I'm thinking to a similar SQ-1 adapter card for the Easel/208 but would it be really useful ?
Unlike the Synthi, the 208 already features a nice step sequencer, a pseudo-random with 4 different outputs and an arpeggiator if paired with a 218e.

Yes...
right...
i thought on the length of the step´s
a typical 8 is easier / more common to use as the easel fiver...

thanks for the link !!!
i´ll bananafy me one this week

A concern with the Easel is the PSU load, the SQ-1 Card is hungry, it takes 155mA on the Synthi's +12V rail via a 7805 to power the SQ-1, which would be heavy even for a recent BEMI/BUSA easel PSU, both +15v and +5V are present on the card slot but +15V is rated 500mA max for the whole Easel + what's plugged in the card slot, I don't know for +5V.
Powering it from the +15V rail via a 7805 with a powered Hub or PSU upgrade as detailed in the VCS3 Card's build notes sounds like the safest solution.
