Serge Extended ADSR - module walkthrough

Post by tytytytyty » Mon Oct 01, 2018 3:57 am

Hi all,

I just posted a new Serge module walkthrough here:

Serge Extended ADSR - module walkthrough

...includes a detailed breakdown on self-cycling the ADSR (many thanks to cebec for that)!

Wow I had no idea thats what the trig input did. And the self cycling trick using trig for interesting shapes is really cool too.

Always thought the extended adsr was a useful albeit somewhat vanilla module. You removed the wool from my eyes.

Superb! Thanks for sharing. :yay:

Excellent write-up Ty. I just finished a dual Ex-ADSR a few weeks ago and honestly hadn't used it much. This really gives me some ideas, especially with the Trig input.

Thanks.

The CV INs on the Serge Ext. ADSR makes it a very powerful module too.
Waveshaping is cool with this module or you can also try this for instance:

This is great. Definitely highlights the 'Extended' aspects of this circuit. Have just been getting to know this one (in R*S form).

Mind if I ask what sort of scope those trace-shots are on? Guessing it must be a storage type? (to hold the low frequency envelopes).

Hey, there. Thanks! Yep, it’s the Tektronix 466 storage scope (same one as in your avatar).

One thing I was curious about (and had to check as I was writing) was whether the graphic on the R*S version also shows the Decay stage as linear on that middle switch position (it does). I don’t know if I would have even caught that it’s exponential (on my STS anyway) in my tests without a storage scope! So, definitely a great tool.

it’s the Tektronix 466 storage scope.
aha, nice! I had an inkling that it might be one of the 4xx Teks. (Something about that phosphor glow). The one over there in my avatar is it's sibling the 468. I haven't dragged mine from the bench into the studio yet, (have a non-storage HP unit doing music duty), but based on how well the tek does those envelopes they may have to trade places for a bit.

Confirmed on that middle stage the R*S graphic (which is the gen 1, there is a newer rev as well apparently) - that's pretty funny. Kudo's for attention to details, not sure I would have picked up on that one. Looks like it also follows the VC All : as-v-increases-envelope-time-decreases convention.

If one is DIY inclined (and has a moddable version) it is possible to add 'end of Delay' and 'end of Attack' pulse outputs which can be quite useful in certain situations.

I must run through your examples with my scope too, I feel I could understand this one a bit better, and as I'm making a few more in the near future it would be useful to get a further grip!

Great page, nice collection of knowledge about serge.
module walkthroughs and patching tips :sb:

edit: tried yesterday extended ADSR with trig input following instructions from ty and it really opens another level of serge sonic possibilities. :woah:
I thought that this module is just standard ADSR and think about what is this doing in whole serge philosophy. but now I see that was only lack of my knowledge.
level up :tu:

Beautiful page and summary. Serge has so little documentation that is clear and comprehensive (at least to me). This is nice. I only wish one of my DTG's was an EXT. DADSR.

Thank you for the time to document your findings.

Shout out to Cebec too!

Excuse my Serge newbie ignorance : what´s the difference between this module and the DTG? where can i find sound or video demos on both?

For starters you could have a look at the blog the OP links to.

The Extended ADSR is an envelope generator, while the DTG is a multi-functional design that can be a AD or AR envelope generator or an oscillator or a filter or a pulse divider or an envelope follower, etc... :dizzy:

Sorry I’m confused. Is the DTG a DUSG? I’m used to the Random source terminology only. I know DUSG have two of them
