My EMS VCS3 cometh but what mods to get?

Discussing some incredible modules that don't quite fit into the other forum categories.

My EMS VCS3 cometh but what mods to get?

Post by amnesia » Mon May 04, 2015 8:35 am

I have just been informed that I am nearing the top of the VCS3 list and must get together a list of the mods I want.

What do people suggest? I intend to get Papz S/H mod but what else from EMS direct?

Oscillator Sync - variable via potentiometerVoltage Controlled Shape (per osc)

Hi/Lo frequency range -switchable

Portamento/glide

Attack time extension - increased to 5 seconds

Voltage Controlled Filter Response ('Q')

10-turn pots on input channels

Centre-zero trapezoid - gives inverted bipolar output

Patchable Voltage Inverter

Extra Input Channel

Switchable 18/24 db per octave filter

Filter 'unslew' switchable on filter's CV input

Main signal output mute switches (robin puts in toggles) (per channel) (this is a cool little talked about mod - but I love it for live jamming in my bedroom in front of the mirror! great for cutting in and out!

this is what I got

Oscillator stabilisation and dual transistor mod on Osc3

Hi/Lo frequency range x 3

Oscillator SyncOsc2

Voltage Controlled Shape – on Osc2 and Osc3

X10 Envelope Attack/Decay time multiplier

Centre-zero trapezoid - gives inverted bipolar output

Patchable Voltage Inverter

Switchable 18/24 db per octave filter

Filter 'unslew' switchable on filter's CV input

10-turn pot on Input Channel 1

External gate input – buffered
Key Gear: Wiard 300 Series, EMS VCS3, Frac Modular (Blacet, Wiard, Bananalogue & Synthesis Technology).

Hi, the Cornwall Synthi VCS has been trickling out for a bit now.

I wanted to ask people what they felt about the mods they'd gotten, now that they've had time with them.
What's essential?
What turned out to be useless?
What do you wish you had gotten done instead?
Do you dislike anything?
I'm wondering about those 3.5mm mods near the matrix. That seems a bit hackish. Did anyone avoid those for that reason? or am I way off.

Thank you

hi, as above I got a number - comments under each one....

Oscillator stabilisation and dual transistor mod on Osc3
I don't have an unmodded Osc 3 to compare it to but I got this because I wanted to use Osc 3 as an audio oscillator and pair it with Osc 2 (remember Osc 1 has different waveforms)

Hi/Lo frequency range x 3
To allow using any Osc as an audio or LFO

Oscillator SyncOsc2
recommended by others. Seems to work differently to synch on other synths I have - works with LFOs

Voltage Controlled Shape – on Osc2 and Osc3
useful for me

X10 Envelope Attack/Decay time multiplier
I often use slow sounds so I decided to get this

Centre-zero trapezoid - gives inverted bipolar output
I find this really useful

Patchable Voltage Inverter
again personally I find this useful

Switchable 18/24 db per octave filter
Recommended by EMS but I think it's one of the more marginal ones - depends on what you use it for - if you want to do bass sequences then yes.

Filter 'unslew' switchable on filter's CV input
I've found if you want to do sequencing this is essential to get the attack right.

10-turn pot on Input Channel 1
If you are going to use with some kind of melodic controller and want to play normal scale then this is probably essential. You only need it on the one channel

External gate input – buffered
again if you are going to want to use some kind of CV controller other than a EMS keyboard you need this.

These are all very much personal choices based on what I intended to use the EMS for while remaining within budget and keeping the machine interface uncluttered. (although compared to euro, frac or even the Wiard 300 series there is plenty of room of the face plate)
