Sampler/Looper pedals that are cool

Post by deltaphoenix » Sun Apr 07, 2013 9:15 am

So why isn't there something like a Make Noise Phonogene in pedal format? It would be so fun to have a Sampler/Looper that allows you to manipulate/FSU/mangle/granulate, etc.
I mean memory is SO cheap, tap tempo is easily available in pedal format, there could be division knobs for every major feature (to make it self contained instead of making it CV reliant, I Like CV but my board now doesn't have much CV, I have had boards that utilize CV a lot).

Am I not thinking of something that kind of does this?

I have been considering a Phonogene, and something like a Pamela's Workout to provide clock/divisions to the CV parameters. But that is awfully expensive ($750 + case/power and some InOut for audio), despite being awesome. That puts it in Octatrack range... I mean a TimeLine is what $450 and does a ton, I have no qualms about digital or anything.

Anything that kind of does this in pedal format?

Have you considered the Strymon El Capistan?

I didn't even think of that. Good suggestion, I just wish there was an expanded version where that is the primary function, with some more features. Definitely pretty awesome secondary function in the pedal.

I may just go with a Pigtronix Infinity Looper at the start of my pedal board and mangle sounds through my pedals. I have use for the 2 inputs and 2 outputs.
I could use the LONG recording times too.

I like to use my ehx memory man w hazarai to mess with loops quite a lot. You can repitch, filter and reverse your loops. Whats really cool is when you have a sound going into it, and you scroll through the different settings while recording. sounds boss.

i have a similar thread going over in the general gear section. probably touches on some things you may find interesting. in general, out of the loopers i own the one with the most potential for screwing with stuff has been the EH 16 second delay reissue. it has the ability to stretch times without repitching loops, allowing for some really weird ambiances and glitches.

Hexe Revolver maybe? I was under the impression Phonogene only samples up to one second anyway.

The Hexe lets you do a hell of a lot with that short sample, in a pedal format.

Octatrack will definitely let you sample (and more than 1 sec of recording) and mangle the bejesus out of your sample. Of course, it's not a pedal but you can connect a MIDI footpedal to it.

There's a Phonogene-like patch for the Nord Modular G2 but that might be way off of your requirements.

the dl4 is probably the most versatile and musical loop ive ever played with. it is not as expansive as the phonogene module however it does allow you to do quick repeating loops. half time/ double time. reverse. long loops. its all in the way you use it.

+1 on the hexe revolver...if you can find one.

You can do some cool loop manipulations with the pigtronix echolution.

The Oberheim/Gibson Echoplex Pro with Loop 4 kind of contains the same basic tricks as the Phonogene minus the CV control and Vari-Speed.
It's a rack unit and a pedal together, not just a pedal though.
When I was reading the manual for the Phonogene, I was struck by how it read a lot like the sections on granular looping and loop windowing in the manual for the Loop4 Echoplex.

I'd love to get a MASF Possessed, just waiting on Prmaxe to get more stock.
It's similar to the Revolver in some ways, but is cheaper.

The original Electro Harmonix 16 Second Delay is pretty awesome, and it has a clock output.

the new ones loop does let you modulate the speed of playback without effecting the pitch, which for me makes it one of the coolest loopers for tonal/ambient stuff out there.

I use two. One Oberheim, One Gibson in brother sync mode with midi sequencer as button press "recaller" during recording and I wing it during improv.
Just now checking the Sherman Filterbank in the mix along with some TC -M2000 reverb, Roland SDX-330 and Ensoniq DP Pro. Next is to try some NM G1 rack patches. Dual mono parametric with a separated out bass signal and treble signal. One for each EDP Old gear but lots of fun with two loopers so far. Working in Roland Vdrum "drummer" and guitar loops with bass and Octatrack "ambiences". тнis setup came to be in a flash dreaм. I had never thought about it and next thing the rack was вeιng put together from тнaт instant aetherspace. ;) Using a Bass VI as my oscilllator. Worked great on Moody sounds noisebox but I wanted more control over rhythm and dynamics. .
