I reflowed most of the motherboard abs it seems to have fixed it. Guess it must have just been a cracked joint.

Alright not sure which Ambika thread to bump but this is the first one I found.

I'm having a god damn whale of a time trying to get this one voicecard working. It's volume is a ton lower than the other voicecards, and the only things I can find from googling are check for shorts and try replacing the TL072. I tried replacing the 072 (and 074 for that matter cause why not) to no success. My eyes don't see any shorts, but a good possibility my eyes are just bad.

Anyone have any ideas? (Big pictures)

Wrong resistor value. Check the 4.7/47K and 2.2/22Ks

I seem to have the correct resistors in there.

Are those the ones that judge output volume? I'll try reflowing those if so.

Edit: no dice on reflowing.

I know this is old, but I had a similar issue when the resistor network near the outputs was installed backwards.

Is there anyone still selling metal enclosures for the Ambika? tubeohm apparently only sells them when you buy a complete kit, and i already have an ambika...i just don't like my current acrylic box.

That was rather nice!
Custom patch?
What sort of reverb?

Yeah custom patch, pretty simple. i tried to be as close as possible to a juno 106.
so osc1 : Saw, osc2 : square. mix 50/50, a little square sub osc and a little noise. a little spread and a very gentle lfo on the pitch.
Delay (space echo) & chorus (ensemble) from guitar rig plugin.
reverb is from ableton live, small size, long time

I got my case from him recently and couldn't be more pleased with it. I'd also recomend an OLED display, it looks great from any angle and there is no ghosting when changing values.

This is the OLED I used: http://www.tme.eu/en/details/rec004002a ... pp5n00000/

Drith
Beautiful!
Did you have to change any components to accommodate the OLD display?
Is Adrian still regularly producing cases?
Can I ask how much the case cost?

Hey folks, I'm considering building an Ambika (Tubeohm Tubika) next year.
I bought one of the original kits with single SMR4 voice card a few years ago but had to sell it due to lack of funds to complete another five voices at the time.

A few questions:
•Can anyone share their thoughts on how the SMR4 and 4P voice cards compare for polyphonic playing?
I remember reading that the thinner resonance of the SMR4 was more Roland-like and better suited to polyphonic playing.
I'm more inclined to go with 4-pole LPFs (even though I love SVFs and other 2-poles) as all of my other synths are 2-pole (Jasper/EDP Wasp clone, SEM, CS-10, Synthasystem... Though the NL2X has various modes but isn't analogue.)
Despite this, should I reconsider the SVF for polyphonic playing?

•How uniform are the 4P and SVF filters in terms frequency offset?
The Tubeohm version of the SMR4 seems to be an improvement since it has a offset trimmer for the VCF frequency so the self-oscillating filters can be played melodically.

•If I decide to build another Ambika, I might also build a single SVF I can swap in/out as required.
Though it's primarily for polyphonic playing, I'd also like to explore using Ambika like a poor man's MonoMachine.
The SVF seems good for this as the Click generator could be used to ping the BPF, right?

I'll perhaps think of more questions...

Thanks in advance!

I can't speak to the SMR4 nor the 4P voice cards, but I do run 6xSVF and the ability to switch between LP, HP, BP is amazing, especially for long evolving pads with the BP filter. Honestly I think the SVF works better with all the wavetables this synth offers. SMR4 and 4P just seem... boring... at least to me.

As far as frequency offset, it's pretty close. You're not going to get in tune self oscillating filters with this though, but honestly I feel like this just adds to the charm of it all. It's imperfectly perfect. I also built this myself and one of my cards is just a little more weird in the filter tracking than the others... I'm guessing it's a tolerance thing. Not really sure. Don't really care. :)

At the end of the day it's all preference, and obviously this is entirely opinion.

I used a VFD display for mine. No ghosting like the OLED, but it has a bit more old school charm in my opinion.

No component changes but I did mount the display on the top side instead of underneath because it is so shallow. I don't remember the price exactly, less than $100.

Just finished my Ambika with the PCB's by Laurentide SynthWorks. Very funny project but soldering the voicecards was so time consuming.
I recommend to use the metal case by Adrian! It's super sturdy and looks absolutely awesome...

SVF vs SMR4 filters

Post by DisappearHere » Wed May 03, 2017 11:51 pm

Reading through this thread has been really interesting and inspiring, thanks for all the photos and demos.
I'm looking to build an Ambika and am having trouble deciding between the SMR4 filter and the SVF filter. I've heard plenty of demos of the SMR4 and it sounds great; however I am curious about the SVF. Specifically, I was wondering if anyone has any links to demos displaying the different filter modes and how they affect the sound, particularly with the use of wavetables? I have not been able to find anything of that nature yet.

I have built all of the filter versions. The SMR4 still stands of above the rest to my personal opinion. +1 on SMR-4 + YAM firmware.
Only LPF and that seems a bit boring to some people but you at least get a good sound.

Has anyone had any experience with the Midas displays on the Ambika?

Looking for a suitable screen, preferably white text on a black background (that hasn't been discontinued) & I'm getting nowhere fast!

Suppose I could always wait until this one is back in stock;
