Nice! Thanks for posting this. I hadn't checked in a little bit. Looks like they updated their site too. :goo:

The TZFM comparator circuit looks simple enough. I really want to buy some of these.

I'm wondering if something like this: https://plastronics.com/catalog/standard-qfn-clamshell/ is available for purchase anywhere. Going to search around. Might be nice for prototyping or DIY with these QFN ICs.

Me too. Looks like a really well thought out design. I'm delighted that it has hard sync (this wasn't obvious in the preliminary datasheet).

all manner of qfn soldering videos on youtube, saw one with someone using a home etched pcb with no solder mask, looks like there's one technique where you hold the iron against the underside of the pcb to melt the solder on the central pad (pcb was designed with no copper or mask under that part by the looks)

The through-zero phase modulation sounds really sweet :tu:

Neil,

Is the linear fm input DC coupled? I.e. is linear detune possible?

Yes it is. Linear detune is definitely possible in both plain VCO mode (just push more current into the LIN input but don't go negative) and in TZFM operation.

A friend of mine gave me some tips on this, but also said it may not be worth the effort. I mean, might as well just order 50-100 chicklet adapters from a pick and place shop with the IC already on them.

ssi are making an evaluation board for $50 with the IC already installed (you have to source & solder all the TH parts)

FWIW I find hand-soldering QFNs with an iron pretty straightforward, certainly easier than the TQFN packages that one finds for STM32 parts on many digital modules. The danger of creating a bridge is very low so once you have the part lined up properly it is pretty plain sailing. Board layout might make a difference, and of course you need the package to be the type where the pads extend up the sides. That does seem to be the case for the SSI2130.

That's what I've been told by the company. They are available right now you just have to contact the sales@soundsemiconductor. Their customer service is amazing and I even have a PDF on the board its self. It basically shows everything you can do with it and they give you a Digikey spreadsheet so you can source all the parts. Contact them if you're interested. I did.

Sadly their chips are not available at the moment. They are a couple of weeks before they release it though. So keep an eye out for when they come out!

Looks like they are for sale now. Anyone done an eagle part yet? If not, I’ll do one over the weekend...

Oops “awaiting stock” :-(

Huh? I cant see stock at any of the uk stockists. Do you have them? Your website says it does not have stock and neither does cesyg. I dont buy based on preorder.

Or do you mean the eagle part? (Your post isnt very informative). I cant see the eagle footprint on the ssi site, your website and cant find it via google... hence my post.

Happy to see, if you do one.
Likewise, I ought to do one up.
(often find DImYself is anyways necessary for aesthetics in the schem)

Sure stocks will become available shortly - the IC has only just been generally released - only samples the last few months I think.
By the way, SSI are great to deal with - great setup!
& super wise/positive of them to get Neil Johnson on board.

Yeah - I agree on all those points - I’ve had some great interactions with ssi - they’re really good to deal with! I’ll aim to do one over the w/e.

Ps apple season! Cider! (Damn pandemic has meant we’ll miss the big group pressing and scratting this year! Also the Brizzle diy group has been on hold for ages!) I’ll send you a pm!

<sigh> So you dont have stock - as I said... I still dont understand what you meant by “someone isn't looking very hard...”. Did you mean that some uk suppliers have stock or that there is an eagle part that I couldnt find? (It just seems an odd comment to make if you dont have stock and you dont know of an eagle part). I’ll wait until there is stock from where I plan to buy them.
