[IC] Buchla blanks shipped from the EU (Round 3?)

Post by julian » Wed Mar 29, 2017 4:07 pm

Im considering making a batch of Buchla style blanks for the European builders, if anyone is interested?

Panels will be in standard Buchla size (4.25" x 7") and cut in 1.5mm (0.059") brushed & anodised finish (one side only), drilled (well, cnc milled) with 4 mounting holes.

This is as close as is probably possible to the (varying) originals. The brushed finish should match visually, and the anodising hardens up the surface to limit scratching and corrosion.

I wont be able to get the unit cost as low as django's group buy of 2012, however, please do remember that a) that was 5 years ago, and b) anything from me *includes* EU taxes, so you wont get stung with import duties & processing on arrival.

Im looking at a unit cost of GBP 9.75, which compares favorably with the general american price of USD 15

(USD 15 would be GBP12.06 without tax, or GBP 14.472 with 20% tax)

My price assumes paypal personal with fees avoided or pre-paid, and does not include shipping (shipping at cost, packing free)

At present this is just an interest check. The brushed finish is not material that i generally keep in stock (i have 1.5mm natural anodised, but not brushed) so id need a number of orders to justify the deal.

Unlikely.

I hate handling non-anodised aluminium. You only have to look at it wrong, and the surface marks.

Even though the raw material would be cheaper, i think i would have to charge *more*, due to the stress and inevitable wastage in handling it.

I'd be keen on 4, as long as sending to Australia is not an issue?

I just send the address to the printer - it matters not to me what country the address says! : )

The only real reason why I said anything in the title is that I can not give a price that does not include EU tax.

Its not really an issue though, as the GBP 9.75 figure is still cheaper than I can find anywhere else, but, I guess, its that bit more attractive to EU residents than those elsewhere?

In case it's not 100% clear - the price is GBP 9.75 per unit regardless of destination. The price includes EU tax, again, regardless of destination. I can not discount further for non-eu residents, however, I suspect the price is still favourable regardless.

Is that all OK / clear?

After saying that i did not want to cut non-anodised, i have just acquired some NOS 0.062" (1.5748 mm) sheet.

It is (light) brushed one side only (and covered with protective film)

I will cut it next week, and see what the result is.

Any chance of double-width panels?

Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black
I would rather do the first run as standard, and see how that goes. If there's demand for double width thereafter then ill offer that.

Of course, i can cut singles in any shape at all as 1-off jobs (1-off pricing), but i would rather not complicate a bulk production job with singles.

If there are many other people who would like doubles, then please mention it here also (for future).

Im going to close this down in just over a couple of weeks.

A lot of people who expressed interest have not confirmed their intent - please note that the availability/price is only valid until 7/5/2017

(that's the 7th of May, not the 5th of July! : )

So, if you want parts at the stated price, please confirm by PM.

Again, i need this from you -

*Number of anodised parts at the GBP 9.75 price.
*Confirmation that you understand shipping is not included, but will be added at cost only.
*Confirmation that you understand the figures are all assuming paypal personal (or that you wish to add the transaction cost)

...this is pretty much your last chance to get in at the advertised pricing : )

Question -

7 inches is 177.8mm
4.25 inches is 107.95mm

Obviously the height of the panels should be the full 177.8mm however, the width is, in other systems, reduced slightly.

Would, say, 0.2mm be sensible? So 177.8 x 107.75mm

For clarity, this doepfer page explains things better -

http://www.doepfer.de/a100_man/a100m_e.htm

(although their reduction varies - sometimes up to 0.4mm)

If i get no conflicting feedback, i think i will just go for my proposed 0.2mm.

ps.

Also mounting hole diameters. Unless i hear otherwise, ill cut them to 3.somthing mm

As the originals were imperial, i suspect 1/8 inch, or 3.16mm?

Thank you. That's a nice offer. I don't suppose you have access to some (good) verniers, do you?

But sending it may be cool also - on scheme of things, you're pretty local!

(I'm in Devon)

Calipers? Yeah I have decent Japanese one. I can measure if you like, but seeing as you'll send me the five I've ordered, I can also post it off to you. Some subtleties are hard to see without the naked eye! PM me your address, it won't be on its way to you till the weekend if that's alright.
