Queen of Pentacles
WELCOME TO THE CLUB

Queen of Pentacles is a 7 voice hybrid drum kit:

Analogue-based: bass drum, snare drum and clap
4 sample-based drums (e.g. hi-hats, ride and crash cymbal – or simply use your own samples via SD card)
Zero-latency sample playback directly from SD card
Hybrid analog sound generation: 3x band-limited LSRF binary noise generators with spectrum animation, injected into discrete analog circuits
On-board effect processor with 2 banks consisting of 16 effects in total, including additional auxiliary input and firmware update over audio
Master isolator-style LP/HP filter with VCA control and saturator booster
Drums that make you dance: Fit all music styles of music – specifically tuned for EDM and Techno
Factory sample banks by Nicolas Bougaïeff (Mute, Novamute) including processed custom sampled Paiste 602 cymbals

QUEEN OF PENTACLES is a complex 7 voice analog drum/percussive synthesizer module based around:

3 analog discrete TR-909 circuits with advanced noise spectrum animation
4 zero latency microSD card sample players – including a set of freshly recorded samples for modern electronic music using handcrafted Paiste 602 15” and 18” cymbals
Effect processor as found in famous Grand Terminal/Milky Way/Blck_Noir

Endorphines Queen Of Pentacles drum module

Post by Kattefjaes » Wed Sep 09, 2020 7:24 am

I'm torn, I recently bought a Blck_noir, which has bags of character, but this thing does have some of the standard 909ish tropes in the box ready to go. While having a 909-style set of drums would be lovely, it seems a bit more... bland. Not sure which one I prefer- maybe this one's a bit on the nose?

Boring, though it doesn't sound bad. SD card placement is stupid. I guess they can always do a v2 and adress that, which i've seen for so many modules over the years lol

if i was a module maker i would look at that PULSAR-23 from SOMA, it's what people are going crazy for these days. Just something slightly similar (but lots cheaper) would sell like hot cakes for sure..

look at the front panel, there is a tune knob there...I imagine it is for pitch too

No, according to the manual at:

https://endorphin.es/wp-content/uploads ... 200824.pdf

...the one on the front is:

"tune decay: pitch envelope decay amount"

moreover:

"That trimmer on the backside of the module sets the kick drum root pitch. By default module's kick is calibrated to approx. 49 Hz (G note)"

The Blck_noir's tune on the front is a tiny, barely sticky-outy trimmer, mind- so still very set-and-forget rather than wiggle-friendly.

Yeah... people complained about the small trimmers on the front of the Blck_Noir, then they do this along w/ the SD card placement.... Next level trolling.

While I do miss clap sounds on my Noir sometimes, I'm kinda torn on this one.

Placement of the SDCard slot is terrible. That and the rear Tuning trimmer need to be front side. Lame...

Seems cool otherwise.

SD Card not easily accessible, no pitch cv, pitch trimmer only on the backside - another module i would never buy

Was anyone really demanding an expensive, weirdly-laid-out module with some 909ish drums whose pitch you can't adjust in 2020?

Have we reached the point where people don't care and will just buy the big new module thing when it drops regardless of what it does?

Yeah, I'm still feeling like a fun clap module in the rack and the Noir will be more fun for me, in the long term. As much as I love the straight and obvious 909 sounds, I feel like it'd be a disappointment to sell the Noir to get this.

Judging by the comments in this thread, no one is particularly excited about this, and rightfully so. I haven't seen a more redundant or ill-conceived design by a major manufacturer in a very long time.

I dunno, we may not be the target market. Obvious 909 sounds in a flashy-looking module may be popular as hell.

Overly-enthusiastic redditors and instagrammers, I fear. What gamers would call "filthy casuals".

Honestly, if I got a free one, I'd probably rack it up and enjoy it, that said. Always fun to have some 909 on tap.

people who want a "one stop shop" module to make "TECHNO"... or at least a very narrow, un-tunable interpretation of it :hihi:

That's what I ended up doing - got a Erica Clap and run it through the Noir's aux in when I'm jonesing for a clap sound. Does the trick.

That said, I don't necessarily think this module is ill-conceived or anything, and if I didn't already own a Noir I'd probably consider getting it, though the aforementioned bizarre design decisions are a pretty big turn off. :despair:

Yeah, I'm still on the fence about which clap to get, don't want anything too massive, but also not just sample-based. I sort of assumed there'd be a perfectly OK 2HP one to go with their reasonable kick, snare and hat, but nope.

I don't think it's ill-conceived, it does a thing that people want, it's just less weird/interesting than I expect from Endorphins, I think. Maybe if it'd come out first, I would have grabbed one and then been gutted when the Noir came out.

A small but growing army of well-heeled business and tech people who use modular synths to "unwind" and don't have time to listen to our babble. They can easily afford to cop every shiny new module the second it's announced and decide if they like it later.
