So just to be sure, the outputs are all analog? I cant see that stated anywhere on the site. Probably something worth advertising more prominently.

People might see "Arduino" and assume DAC or 127 step midi resolution

Sorry for being dense, but then how does one add the device to the cart for purchase?

Wait till February when they are available to ship. I'll probably do preorders before that but until I have a firmer delivery schedule from my vendors, I'll leave it at 0 inventory.

Yes, the CV side is all analog. Proper reference voltage, etc. The device has a 12bit ADC which gives you 4000 something values for the I2C and the midi is 7bit CCs (0-127). I'll update the listing to spell that out, youre not the first person to ask about this.

No, everything is in production but with the Kung Flu, this probably wont get out this month. I'll get updates next week when everyone is presumably back to work. I have a handful of devices that I can offer ahead of that, if anyone is interested in a prerelease device (these will be engraved panels instead of printed), send me a PM

Re: Announcing F8R, Eurorack 8 channel fader bank (PRE ORDER OPEN)

Post by Altitude909 » Mon Mar 16, 2020 12:55 pm

Ok. Pre Orders are open.

I have a limited amount of built units on hand, these vary a little from the final device in that they lack the DIP switch which was added at the last minute. The dip switch allows you to switch the various I2C modes without having to recompile the firmware, if you're fine with all of that, let me know and I can get one out to you this week.

Also, please note the name change. F8R sounds cooler and I dont want people to think this is a derivative of the 16n. Beyond the concept, this is a completely new device from the ground up.

I've been beta testing the F8R for a couple months and it has a fantastically useful controller. I've been using it with all manner of I2C modules so if you have questions along those lines just fire away!

Foolish question, but does inverted mean jacks at the top?

Ok, everything's in stock now (I2C/midi cables, expander, etc).

I'm working on manual but the apocalypse has been an oddly busy time time so its slow going. Feel free to ask questions here if anything isnt clear. I'll add some usage notes in the OP

This controller can be very useful
I would have loved a couple of pots for setting offset and coarse for each channel, avoiding the use of A-183-2

unfortunately, There simply isnt enough room. I wanted to stay with the 60mm size faders and that barely fit with a jack and switch per channel

Those of you who have this, how do you like the LED faders? I am trying to decide between the LED/non-LED versions and not sure. I think I'd prefer non-LED but if the LEDS themselves are somewhat dim, I might not mind and dig the slimmer profile.

I have both w/ and w/o LEDs. I found the green pretty bright so I flipped them backwards for red (bicolor LEDs). I think your preference might depend on how often you play in the dark, because the LEDs do not indicate anything.

That's really the only reason I used them, to see in the dark. I use pretty powerful LEDs to get the current draw down so pretty much any other 2x3 LED in the spot will make them considerably dimmer or you could just pull them altogether

Thanks for making me realize I could just change all the LEDs. Literally have them sitting around and forgot that was an option. Now I have rainbow LEDs!

Anybody have part numbers for these LEDS and something that may be dimmer?

I love the LEDs, as I do all blinky lights. That being said, I would love it if there was a version of F8R where the slider LEDs indicated voltage -- one color getting brighter for 0 to +5v or 0 to +10v, and then for bipolar action, would use one color getting brighter for 0 to +5v and another for 0 to -5v. I think the Noise Engineering Lapsus Os sort of works this way, except those sliders have such a short throw it can sometimes be hard to achieve a very specific voltage.

I don't really feel like I need the slider LEDs to show voltage like that, but it would be nice.

The only very minor issue I have with the current F8R is that the voltage range switches are hard to use. They are really tiny and it can be hard to switch from one value to another (particularly when trying to set to the middle value). I don't know if they are just cheap parts or if those are the only ones that work with the size restrictions, but I do wish they were easier to use. But like I said, it is a very minor issue.

Even with these minor issues, I love the F8R. It has quickly become the centerpiece of my control skiff. Great work, MSW!

I looked at doing the LED as an indicator to CV activity and its definitely doable and may be added to a future revision but it would double the part count and require a whole rework of the device. The LED faders were a late feature addition for no other reason than the cool Sifam LED slicer caps so for now, just lights is where it will stay.

the voltage range switches were a big problem in the design phase since there is very limited vertical space. a jack and and slider takes up 95% of the usable height and number of 3 position switches on the market that fit in the remaining space I can count on one hand and of those, ones that are available with an actuator that can be made long enough to clear a panel i can count on one finger. I did evaluate that part from several different vendors and the ones I settled on were the best ones. The alternative was headers on the back and a somewhat fiddly slide switch on the front is still better than headers on the back. Its not a control that I really expect anyone to be going after often so it seemed like a decent compromise
