Make Noise Dynamix (retired)

Post by TEKBRAIN » Fri May 31, 2019 11:16 am

Probably an old new but I did not find a topic on the subject.

Make Noise Dynamix is retired after two years.

Yet Optomix lives on?

Maybe people don't find LPGs to be as interesting without vactrols?

Or without "Strike" input.

At the risk of being completely wrong my guess is that MN developed dynamix when the vactrol ban in eu went into effect. They used to have cadmium which is toxic. But now that component manufacturers have new vactrols without cadmium, the need for an emulation wasnt there.

The Natural Gate doesn't use vactrols.

But it simulates a vactrol's response, while Dynamix does not. Which is the point.

Occam's razor etc. Basically Dynamix existing does not make it instantly impossible to find an Optomix, and as it turns out people care a lot about vactrols. Similarly I don't find it a mystery to me what happened to Mysteron ... Rings. Lots of people probably liked both (I sure do) but only had space/money/rationale for one karplus engine, and so on.

Dynamix is also taken from the 0-coast, but honestly at least to me, it by far isn't the really-interesting part I would have actually wanted from 0-coast standalone, which would have been that Overtone/Multiply section on its oscillator.

I really liked the Dynamix, it had some nice, subtle drive on the outputs and an ability to emulate side chaining (which I could use right now) but wished the aux input had an attenuator or level control of some sort. If I didn't have such a limit on space in my rack(and a need for more mixable/vca channels) I would have kept mine. Alas I sold mine and replaced it with a Happy Nerding 3x VCA.

IMO Dynamix is great module with own character, i gad it for a long time, and planning to get one again, vactrols is cool, but sometimes its unnecessary

In the past couple of years, with every module Make Noise introduced, retired, or reissued someone always thinks it has something to do with vactrols. (Except maybe Mysteron, but honestly it wouldn't have surprised me if it came up there too. :hihi:)

I liked the 0-Coast quite a bit, and Dynamix had some neat stuff going for it.
But every time I would switch a voice between Dynamix and any other LPG (with the same control envelope, tweaking curvature if needed), Dynamix just didn't compare favorably. It seemed kind of lifeless IMHO.

Nothing to do with vactrols, vactrol emulation, or fast response -- it's what's going on in the frequency domain that counts to me. I prefer more high-end rolloff as the amplitude decreases, and Dynamix went with very, very subtle rolloff.

If you look at my profile I really like MN, the B&G SS is the basis for my setup.

This module would have sold better if it was like 1ch per 4hp, chain-able. 10hp for 2channels of VCA/LPG is just not cutting it for most people.

I also think MN needs to just make grey, and B&G, panels for everything, including back catalog. I'm not saying I would have bought this if it was Black, but I don't think if you prefer Black panels, which I'll remind you are the basis for all MN pre-fab systems... it's pretty weird to occasionally drop these new modules in grey.

My plan with Dynamix has been to buy one secondhand and I've never seen one come up at a low enough price. I guess maybe people just didn't buy that many of them.

The 0-Coast circuit has a great sound (hollow, snappy, dark) and it's great with short envelopes, so I could see this being awesome.

I still have Dynamix. I actually prefer the response to the optomix. I had and loved my optomix v1 for years but sold it recently during a downsize. I found that when I played my nastier modules (i.e. noise engineering) thru optomix, it cut out a lot of the harsher end that I sometimes wanted, especially for fast amplitude modulation. I still also have an Lxd so I go to that for my vactrol needs.

Collectors item now. I also like the Pittsburgh Dynamic Filter for non-vactrol LPG.

Ive been kinda non-plussed with the Dynamix. For hoggin up 10hp, I dont think it brings enuf to the table. Considering selling mine off

Probably didn't do the trick with most people, hence the quick retirement.

Yeah, that Pittsburgh one is excellent once you get your head round the various controls and how they interact. Have had some awesome results from it

There is a lot of overlap between the Dynamix and the X-Pan. Naturally they have different feature sets, but if I was in the maket for a Dynamix today, I would heavily look at X-Pan too.

Do you have more information about these "new vactrols without cadmium"? They'd be very interesting for module design...

Contour is my favorite EG in Eurorack.

Function is great, but I sold mine along with a Mini Slew and 321 to consolidate to a Maths.
