2 uVCA or 1 Veils?

Post by Rafi » Fri Nov 04, 2016 12:24 pm

Aside from having the Bias knob... 2 uvca (12 hp) or 1 Veils (12hp) What are your thoughts on what to buy and why? Go! :minimoog:

Blinds user here, but yeah. No good reason to give up the built in mixing on Veils. I could never give it up. At least not given same hp and no other special features.

I had the same dilemma and went with Veils eventually because it was new on sale at Perfect Circuit for the price of one new uVCA II. I'm really loving it. I have space for another 2 uVCA IIs but I'll probably just get another Veils. You can never have enough Veils.

Has anybody listened to them side by side? I like how the uVCA distorts at high CV settings, but what about Veils? Is it similar to Blinds?

I just got my first setup this week but have been making heavy use of Veils and find it to be a great VCA/mixer in my small system. I'm already thinking I'd like to get a Blinds as well because all my Veils/Shades inputs keep getting used. Turns out you guys were right about the usefulness of utility modules!

Been looking at Veils or Frames for a multi VCA. Really like idea of the key frame functionality. Any thoughts?

I use the bias offset on uvcaII allllll the time, generally very slowly pulling up the volume with the response set close to exponential, then dialing in volume modulation

on the most recent models the two channel outs are normalled so you could get two sets of two channel mixing

you should have some dedicated mixing options anyway :)

Tangle Quartet is stellar but is only Linear whereas Veils and uVCA are linear>exponential.

I can't comment on the modules in question, but all things being equal sometimes it's nice to have VCAs spread out in a system near where you use them most. Not to hate on Veils, just a less-technical consideration for how you patch :tu:

The price tag on Veils does make it the more appealing option tho.

Sold my 2 uVCAs and bought Veils instead. Very happy with that decision. 4-channel mix, layout that I prefer, bigger LEDs, cheaper, less bleed. I don't miss the bias knobs of the uVCAs because I also have a Blinds.

Hmm, I may have to eventually sell my µVCA II and get Veils.

Interested in this comparison also - Tangle Quartet vs. Veils. Is that to say Veils is lesser somehow / not so 'stellar' (which I assume is a reference to quality?) but for the exponential functionality?

^My response meant that Tangle Quartet is a great module but because it is only linear response that it's not quite an applicable comparison. I've not used it for audio much, but for cv modulation it is great. But you pay more to have that functionality crammed into 8hp vs. 12 (+-$100 difference).

Also don't have veils or uVCA so not comparing, I just really like Tangle Quartet... I'm probably in the market for a uVCA, though, if anyone is looking to ditch theirs for a veils!

I also took advantage of the Mutable sale at Perfect Circuit to stock up on some Mutable modules. I don't have the uVCA, so I can't compare Veils with it. I can say that I am extremely happy with Veils, and the price is an added bonus. It's ultra clean, zero bleed, mixes up to 4:1 and has continuous linear to exponential response. I was always tempted to buy a Linix, but felt that I would miss the flexible response of the uVCA. So for me, Veils was a no brainer.

I recently sold my UVCA 2 and bought a veils. Really happy with it. Love the ability to chain and the extra gain is really useful.

You can never have enough VCAs and you can never have enough types of VCAs. If you like Veils that's great but the more the merrier. I'd get a uVCA as well.

Right now I have a uVCA2, a Doepfer A-132-3 and a Malekko VCA. Technically my A-101-2 LPG can be a VCA, and I also have a Triatt that if I was not wanting CV control of can function kind of like a VCA - kind of.

I thought about a Veils and I decided against it. I really like that I have different tonal options with my VCAs as they all impart a little bit of a different character because of the components used and the way the makers wanted them to sound. I think one of the great joys of modular is the open availability of options. Embracing it has made me even happier.
