interesting ways to control Rene's Gate Length..<)

Post by revoltcrews » Sat Mar 22, 2014 1:01 pm

been "troubleshooting" controlling Rene's gate length this morning.
i'm sending a multed QVC / Gate out to my Doepfer A1922 and then to Ableton.
but to no avail can i control the gate length of the notes being sent.
i can modulate everything else so far but the note/gate length..

:help: :help: :help:

Iirc, rene will only send trigs when you are in snake mode.

There is no way to change gate length directly in the Rene. You could use a vco's pulse out to clock the Rene and then change the pulse width to achieve different gate lengths (make sure the vco goes down to lfo rate). This won't work in snake mode

not running in snake mode.
i definitely know about the trigger happy snakes.

AAAAhhhh. Pulse Width. okay.
will experiment.
just reeeeeally want to achieve shorter and/or longer notes per step..

Hook the Trig out to Maths Trig in channel one. Use a fast rise time and then adjust the fall time to adjust the length of the gate coming out of the eor jack

Alternatively: Doepfer 162 or 142-1.

The 162 gives you manual control over gate length and additionaly trigger delay. The 142-1 gives you voltage control over the gate length.

The SSF Propagate would be great to control the gate lengths of René, really looking forward to try it one day (funds permitting).

Meanwhile, the 162 is a pretty cheap module, that lets you dial in just the right gate lengths (no CV though, sadly).

Trigger an envelope? Or am I missing the point? :despair:

Scrub that… I'm being dim and didn't read the Ableton bit.

Great topic! Can't wait to try the PW idea- thinking I could run quantized sequence stored for notes and then the unquantized to control the PW of the clock!
I'm Tim and I'm excited for modular synthesis! :nana:

this works great for "note length (from rene x gate out)"...
to piston honda. achieved a slight reverse note as well. which was sweet.
will be trying the ableton bit later.

sideNote*** also curious about "velocity" in the euro world.

and.
at a certain point., when using the Maths trigger method.
the notes turn off, and/or don't respond to speed of sequence changes very well.
for example, when, Fall reaches a certain CCW point. the notes disappear.
as if at 0 velocity.

definitely achieving a "note length" of sorts.

most likely, its the CV to usb/midi conversion happening thats dropping notes.
using abletons built in note length device achieves some nice changes.
but not alltogether sharp....

ie: Renes X Gate out to the Gate in on Doepfer a1922 ->usb/midi.

2 years later, any news options?

I clock the René from my DAW (through a Alyseum MS 812)

I could edit the length of the note (gate) in ableton, but I want a fun/live option.

142-1 seems a great add to my setup : Clock->142-1->René

What do you think? Any news options now?

Cheers,
J-P

The only I know of that is not covered here is Animodule Gate_Mod: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/animodule-gate-mod

One newer module for fun gate/trigger manipulation is the Rebel Technology Phoreo.

Incoming triggers pass through three stages: a Pulse Width modulation stage, a clock multiplier stage, and a gate repeater stage.

Each stage is normalized (in the same order as above) and each stage is CV controllable.

You can also use each stage separately to modify different clock/trigger/sequences.

But the real fun comes from using all three stages together, I think. You can take a pretty boring steady trigger sequence and get some really funky rhythms out on the other side.

My example above. Using the clock mult stage to clock the rene that is selecting which slice of the phonogene to play, and then using the repeat stage to control the playing of slices.

MI Peaks has some bonus modes, one of which is called "trigger delay/shaper"- it can take a trigger and output a gate with adjustable width.
