Mike,

This forum was here for me when I needed it, so I'm giving what I can because the forum needs it. I may not be super active here any more, but I'm wishing you the best, and this place and you people will always hold a special place in my heart.

man that sounds cheesy as fuck, but seriously, you're all awesome.
bsmith: it would be awesome to see people with lots of euro give them pokemon values and do battle

Muffwiggler: I've seen communities ruined over politics. I've seen friendships end over racism. I've never seen these things happen as a result of breasts.

without knowing pricing structure or breakdown of the hosting agreement, this suggestion might be silly... but heregoes anyway

some of the 'off topic' image threads probably consume a lot of storage. would it cut down on monthly costs to reduce the storage capacity? obviously images are important here, especially in the DIY section, but i'm sure we could cut it in half, or even have a private webserver for that. just a thought, i'm not really a tech dude, but i'm around it to fake it to an extent [/img]

Is there a way to see donation progress towards paying off that bill?

Regardless, I'll be donating here in a sec. It'd just be nice to know how close we are to keeping Muff around a bit longer.

Happy to contribute! If everyone just thought of this as a (modest) module purchase, we’d have it knocked down in no time. :yay:

Best wishes, Mike. Hope all goes well.
The question about a backup plan is a reasonable question. In the past when technical problems caused an outage there seemed to be non-technical problems too. I'll kick in something of course and just hope it all keeps going.

Full speed ahead! :tu:

Just a suggestion...

This forum needs more transparency in regards to cost and funding.

Please just put some ads, it would not take much, just 1-2 up top to pay for hosting ++

This wonderful site is always in emergency mode, and the alternative to having emergency crowdfunding is some other regular form of funding.

Thanks for making this awesome forum, please thing about! :hail:

How is this site not being paid for from the monthly donation on patreon? $885 a month should be far more than enough to pay the bills for hosting.

I am a Patreon subscriber and kicked in a bit extra today.

But I agree with the concerns about transparency. It really does seem like the Patreon contributions should be more than sufficient to cover site expenses. Something seems out of control.

I'm sure many of us wouldn't mind some combination of advertising and subscriptions if they helped keep the site afloat. Reserve BST posts for paying members. Let members disable ads for $5/month. Let members purchase inexpensive ads to promote their gear, services or music. That sort of thing.

But first I'd like to know why hosting seems more expensive than it should be.

As of the date/timestamp on this post, there are 43,147 members in this forum.

Charge $10.00 per year to belong here. Problem 100% solved.

If Photobucket can get away with charging people $35.00 or so per year just to host some fucked up pictures of people's stuff, why can't this WONDERFUL PLACE just have an annual membership fee of $10.00 lousy bucks per member per year?

Oh, there would be tax issues? Ok, fine, make it $15.00 per year per member to cover the tax issues.

I simply cannot believe that Mike is reduced to begging for money just to allow us to have this place .... he is suffering while we enjoy ourselves at HIS EXPENSE? Why should just the willing few (very very few, relatively speaking) carry everyone else's water? (I'm talking about the Patreon donations).

Set it up, starting Jan 1, 2019 ..... annual membership fee with auto billing and auto payment, just like Photofucket does. Mike deserves a fucking paycheck for providing this place as well. It pisses me right the hell off to learn that the poor bastard that makes this place possible for 43,000 goddamned people is actually hurting to pay his own damned rent! Let alone keeping the lights on around here? Seriously?

C'mon .... someone who know what the hell they're doing ... offer up your time to set up whatever it takes to do a yearly membership fee of $10 goddamned lousy bucks per member .... I have ZIP CLUE about how to go about doing that otherwise I'd do it myself. In a heartbeat.

This is fucking ridiculous.

We're better than this y'all. $10.00 per year per member .... seriously ... that's all it would take. That would bring in nearly a half million per year.

I've done enough damage with my mouth by now ... I'm outta here .... later.

(A pretty strong argument for advertising here is that companies are getting a lot of benefit from the site, and their sponsorship could certainly be helpful. But since a lot of people hate ads, letting them pay membership fees to disable them makes sense too.)

I would also like more transparency.
I have been doing the Patreon since it was set up - very happy to do this given the usage of the forum and my own subforum.

A minimum monthly payment for each subforum would make sense.

I think it is important for Mike to clearly address costs - both in terms of what is coming in and what is needed. Much as I love Mike, he had been pretty much hands-off publicly for some time and I do agree that moving the setup to an entity independent of Mike would seem sensible, both in terms of stress for Mike, but very much also to ensure stability for the forum.

Don't agree with the paid subscription idea as I think it's great how the search results come up on Google and anyone can click on them. Wouldn't paid subscription mean it would be locked from non subscribers? Would really stifle new membership and would be a less diverse place

If you did that I promise you this would happen, sorry:
1. Youd kill new membership overnight. New folks will go to gs modular. Why would anyone pay $10 when there's a free forum?
2. The userbase of GS grows
3. Over time GS gains the critical mass

Membership insinuates things beyond a forum in my opinion; discounts, events etc.
