Realizing that the fundamental frequency and the perceived pitch may be related, but are not the same. Are you referring to formant synthesis or to weakening/ deleting the fundamental? The latter is a nice old trick from the Prophet VS and maybe some wavetable synths also. Speaking of which, for me...

I think you can get a similar/identical effect by AND-ing or mixing an inverted envelope generator with the CV input of the VCA controlling the sound you want to punch/suck In that vein but with more precision, use an envelope follower and/ or lag processor to follow signal 1, then invert the CV an...

Can you give any sources for that, please? I searched but didn't find any. (I don't doubt what you wrote, AND I feel similarly about synths vs. destructive editing, just would like to read more)

I've had issues with newly pressed records on numerous occasions. I think part of the problem has to do with vinyl being a "re-newed" technology. The people who became experts in record pressing retired in the 80s and 90s without transferring that knowledge. In effect, we have to learn how to press...

I read that an actual reverb plate was used on much 90s Basic Channel/ Maurizio/ maybe also Chain Reaction stuff. Sadly can't find the source now but will post it if I do. If true this may be a big part of "the" sound. Strange it hasn't been mentioned yet in such an old thread.

For me any processing depends on how dry or wet I recorded the modular, and on whether there was any keyboard performance or just sequencing and knob tweaking. I enjoy applying heavy FX while tweaking the modular, and snippets from that usually remain unchanged except for EQ and dynamics so I "keep ...

Malekko Wiard Boogie Filter. Just speculating that it's underrated because it was never re-released with the Richter branding, unlike the other modules. Definitely wasn't the same kind of success as the Borgs. I can imagine why... it's difficult to tame and not very "general purpose". But I like it.

I'd put them all on a light little table on wheels that you can move around in the studio. Easily DIY'ed if you don't have one. I can't stand stands, don't enjoy playing on a keyboard that's on a stand, can't even start to imagine patching something like the MS 20 on a stand. All the, WIGGLING and w...

Hovercraft & Futuresound: it makes total sense in the context (!) of the first rule, only seems strange when isolated. If you can't exchange modules and have to "earn" new ones instead, you are forced to work harder at EITHER getting something out of that modules to finish a new track, in which case...

Integrator = slew limiter = lag processor. Agreed, every system should have an S&H/ T&H. The 266 integrator isn't optimal tho as it has only one control for rising and falling slopes.

Has someone tried that Silent Way feature with vactrol filters/ LPGs that are fed a pitch CV and an envelope at the same time? I would expect it to fail because the CV inputs on those are effectively "interactive", meaning you can't eliminate the final deviation from the 1V/oct or whatever custom cu...

Re: Analog or digital?

The digital vs analog argument has been going on a long time, and in my mind it's not the same debate it used to be due to high bit/sample rates and cheap processors. With the emergence of 32bit audio and 64bit filters, can digital compete with analog in the synth world? What would convince an anal...

Good to know Doepfer's implementation differs from Buchla's. I think they're both valid and come from solid background philosophies. Personally I find the variable distribution more musically useful and exciting than variable range. You can always run the output through a scale quantizer. And in the...

You are of course right that the "source material" is the most important. I was assuming that the Blacet VCO outs are as symmetrical as a "classic" and also normally priced (read: not Cirrocco prices or so) VCO design can be. I don't know if it is and how much of that depends on the builder or on pa...

Second what Dave said. Just curious, where did you read or hear that the output range was variable? Even the drawings on the module (at least the original Buchla faceplate - don't know what people might be using these days to avoid the controversy, or not), they show clearly that it's about distribu...

OP: if you're looking to do dynamic FM, that is, modulating the index with CVs while the notes sound, then the most crucial element is the VCA that you use to attenuate the modulating VCO with that CV. It should have minimal DC offset to avoid (additional) pitch drift during CV level changes, harmon...

But what are we really hearing, I mean which part or which harmonics are from the VCO and which from.the FX unit?

I stopped playing instruments in my first years with synths, but I don't recommend it. Consider it a teenage mistake (long time ago). Takes away from musicality when programming. Agree with the previous post, it's a lifelong pursuit.
