Re: Mackie's Onyx Series Returns

Incredibly disappointed in this. I have a Mackie Onyx 1640i that I’ve had for 10 years and it’s getting long in the tooth - scratchy faders, crosstalk between channels, flakey mutes, and it’s firewire - but it’s the most fully equipped mixer of its type ever made. Every single time Mackie announces ...

Something I haven’t seen mentioned is that Johnny Jewel uses these very heavily and plays one live. So much of the Chromatics and Glass Candy stuff is 700S.

I fully intend to grab one of these cheap / used / or on clearance and use it as a funky pattern generator for my Cirklon.

Korg PS- series. Absolutely nothing else like then out there, extremely rare, and extremely cool.

Re: Roland MC4 opinions...

Love the MC4. I have an MC4b. At first I was worried it might be a pain to program, but honestly, its really not complicated if you read the manual and it's so tight. It's so great with modulars as you ultimately have 8 CV out and 4 gate plus 4 MPX. My new quest is I'm trying to sync it to 24 track...

I have both. The Cirklon is not going to scratch that itch for you. It’s still totally great but fundamentally different feelings in use.

Re: Sequentix Cirklon - what make it so desirable?

- ties an entire room of gear together - vintage, modern, modular, MIDI, CV and gate, DIN sync, mono, poly, drum machines, etc. etc. etc. in a really seamless way. Everything is in sync and in tune thanks to CV scaling, rock solid timing. I see other sequencers that have so many tracks and abilities...

Re: Which analog monosynth or semi is the best for spontaneous timbral improv

The answer, overwhelmingly, is Music Easel. It’s what it was built for, and to quote Todd Barton it can really “turn on a dime.”

On a budget? 0-coast and 0-control. Massive aleatoric possibilities with wide and sudden timbral changes at will.

Re: Social Entropy Engine

I think that the Engine manual is a GREAT reference manual but a pretty bad user manual. That is, if you're just trying to search it to find a specific thing it's pretty quick to do so and is generally well explained but it doesn't do a good job of narratively talking through and considering the hum...

I have read reviews and this whole thread and I just can’t get my head around the workflow on this thing at all. I’m glad people are happy but I just can’t figure out how or why someone would opt for this unless they have like two pieces or gear.

Re: Roland TR8S questions

I recently got an 8S after years of using the regular -8 every day. The 8S really rules in general and feels like a nice upgrade. But: - there's no global assigning of individual outputs, which makes me INSANE. It has to be set and saved per kit. - the menu diving is really bad for everything other...

Re: Anybody make a performance mixer like this anymore ?

The MX-1 is super cool and I keep almost buying one but the inputs and USB situation is just so bizarre. I love Roland but they always use weird nonsensical “Roland logic” in their design decisions. And even though I’ve read the manual I still truly don’t understand what’s actually compatible over t...

It’s also worth not forgetting just how LONG they left users waiting, to the point where people started a petition and it was only after that that they fixed “some” fo the problems. https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2016/03/24/tempest-drum-machine-users-petition-for-an-os-update/ I swore I’d never ...

I even used the Tempest to teach a creative drum synthesis workshop at the very first Knobcon. I don’t think I could have been m...

I just got a used Hermod and while it’s cosmetically great the encoder requires a very surprising amount of force pressing down before it registers. Is this normal? Is it like this at first and then breaks in?

Re: Why is the Mother 32 so expensive?

If you look, you’ll find this trend across almost all used gear on reverb and it’s clearly a result of Covid. A few theories, and it’s probably some combination of: 1. People got stimulus money and have been buying gear so the used supply is much smaller 2. Many people are unwilling to go ship thing...
