Re: Behringer Mono/Poly!

That demo sounds horrible! Nothing close to the richness and timbral variety of the mono/poly I've owned and performed/recorded with for the last 22 years. But, we can't rule out "operator error" for this demo, it doesn't seem the performer figured out what to do with the cross-mod or filter settin...

Re: RIP Dave Greenfield

New Order are (and were) boring live, except for Peter Hook. If you could have four mid-80s Peter Hooks on stage (with the requisite mountain of cocaine it would take to power said band) it would make for quite a performance.

Re: what is your favorite amp?

Yes, those nextone amps look and sound like snake oil to me. I've listened to the demos - lots of them - and can't hear any significant difference between the tube types. It's still a nice sounding amp though. My mesa boogie is set up with el34's on the outside, and 6L6gc's on the inside, so you ca...

DOD Carcosa fuzz. Does everything from thick overdrive to ripping velcro.
Fuck yes. I need to get a Carcosa; I still have no idea why I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet.

Re: what is your favorite amp?

About four months back I took delivery of a Boss Nextone Stage. For years I was a tube partisan, but I'm starting to swing over to the other side. I confess the four models (6L6, 6V6, EL84 and EL34) sound close as makes no difference to identical to each other, and despite multiple efforts I haven't...

Zoom ms70cdr, line level stereo in and out, up to 6fx in series
All the Zoom MS-series are great and work well with both guitar and synth levels. The phasers and choruses in particular are fantastic on the MS-70CDR. I'd still buy them if they were twice the price.

Re: David Sylvian

Loved him with Japan/Rain Tree Crow and his earlier solo stuff (Gone To Earth and Secrets Of The Beehive). His collaborations with Fripp were on constant loop for me when new; they were my soundtrack to the mid-90s. Since then I've been seriously disappointed by his output. Dead Bees has to be one o...

DOD 250 Overdrive (the 2010s reissue). I picked mine up new for around $90 Canadian, which was around $70 USD at the time. Digitech is blowing them out for $45 USD at the moment. It's a simple interface, has a bright distortion that sounds like a less obnoxious version of the MXR Distortion+, and ca...

Re: Never meet your heroes

MI Ambika: crazy digital oscillators through real analog filters, hard to find a fully assembled one, had to be the unique polysynth I was looking for. Sounded muffled and boring regardless of which oscillator type I chose and UI wasn't a lot of fun either. I tried to convince myself several times ...

Re: Never meet your heroes

I've had the good fortune of "meeting" a few of my heroes over the years and only the Minimoog has truly surpassed the hype. It really is a sublime instrument that got so much right out of the gate. I can look past its flaws like note priority, lack of retriggering, no sync or sweepable PWM, etc, an...

Re: Not putting markings around knobs on modules...

Those manufacturers who insist on too many tick marks (cough, Blue Lantern, cough) are for me committing the far greater visual sin. Years ago I spoke with one of the guys who worked at ARP in the '70s, and he said ARP's practice of having five lines of demarcation on their sliders was a nod to the ...

Re: i wish i could have a million guitars...

I went from having a single guitar five years ago to seven now; nine if you count basses. 2 Stratocasters (one mexican, one american) 2 Jaguars (mex and yank as well) 1 Brown Bear, a custom Telecaster shape with a humbucker in the neck replacing the usual single coil there 1 Godin Session 1 Gretsch ...
