Re: The Definitive Sequential Prophet VS resource thread

That slider kludge is ugly. The right one from Digi-Key costs less than $2. I ordered 5 of them last time I serviced my VS. I also own a Studio 440 which uses a lot of the same parts including switches and the slider. I got it because I already owned the VS and I noticed from pictures and articles t...

Re: What new booty did you buy?

A friend just gave me a melodica (Yamaha P-37D.) I'm slightly addicted  Definitely going to be good lung exercise and an incentive for me to finally learn circular breathing. Also broke down and ordered a Behringer VC340. Melodicas are very cool. I have a Hohner 37 note one from the early 80's...

Re: Ensoniq Lovers Unite

The EPS 16+ rack I mentioned earlier just sold for $1452.52 plus shipping. That's a lot of love and money. The non-working Ensoniq samplers on Ebay that have sold recently have been for $300-500. Daydream sound constantly plugging them in his videos has had its effect. Kind of funny that back in the...

Re: Ensoniq Lovers Unite

Best bet, as always, is to source something for repair locally. Just last week an Sq80 popped up on the local craigslist with a broken slider for $225. If I had the cash I would have jumped all over it  That works on Ebay and Reverb too. I've gotten all kinds of gear in need of work at really ...

Re: Ensoniq Lovers Unite

There is a lot of love for Ensoniq out there, much more than back when their products were new. I like the word "alchemy" used to describe Ensoniq samplers. Unfortunately, all the love for Ensoniq has driven prices sky high. There's an absolutely drop dead gorgeous EPS 16+ rack on eBay right now in ...

Re: Skinny Puppy WHY?

Necrobump for SP. I’m working on a new album and listening to Last Rights between sessions really resonated with me. I’ve seen them live only once but was blown away by them! Cevin and Dwayne are (and we’re in the latter), synth gods in terms of what they could get out of a mono synth. I think Skin...

Re: Recommendation for physical spectrum analyzer?

I got a DSP8024 in a local second hand shop just because it was there and cheap. It's got DSP based EQ and 1/3 octave spectrum analysis. The LCD display is decent but on the simplistic side. So far I've only used the spectrum analyzer. These are actually quite useful. Pair it with a measurement mic...

Behringer has two of them, the DEQ2496 and the DSP8024 Ultracurve Pros. I got a DSP8024 in a local second hand shop just because it was there and cheap. Re: The Definitive Sequential Prophet VS resource thread

I meant the 1.45 roms, sorry about the typo.

My VS has a few of keys that have a wider gap and I see six in yours and three on the Juno right in the middle. It seems to happen where there are no black keys in between other keys on the VS.

Re: The Definitive Sequential Prophet VS resource thread

Am curious what the deal is with the Prophet VS and the seemingly random spacing between keys. Is this just a side effect of the synth not being designed with sufficient bracing for strength, or something else? Pretty much all the photos online of VSs exhibit the issue to some degree or other; ther...

Re: If Recording ...

When recording, I pay attention to levels mainly. There are times I will put a compressor/limiter on the bus inserts but that is more to shape the sound a bit than to tame levels. That is generally just for what I would call a finished mix. I do a lot of more casual recording, kind of like an artist...

Re: Which Mixer to get?

The best mixer I have for realtime live mixing and playing like an instrument is far from the best in sound quality. It's the 6 input mixer on an old Tascam Porta Two Ministudio. It's the compact layout with big, around 1", round rubber caps on the pots and the finger indentations on the sliders and...

Re: Do high end mixers matter?

The IO on the back would be an issue. My humble Mackie has the rotopod with all inputs in the front which integrates it with the patchbays racked on top of it. That means I can take the feed of any individual input or submix and patch it directly into a number of different recording devices and samp...

Re: Do high end mixers matter?

A bit much for what it is. 24 inputs in a 19" rack package sounds nice but they're stereo inputs that have one fader for each two inputs and I prefer one to one with stereo panning. 8 effects and returns is also nice but there are no pres, buses, or in channel compression. It is also built the same ...

Re: SD Card rack mount sampler?

Just about any sampler with SCSI could be converted to SD operation with a SCSI2SD card. The Akai Z4, Z8 and MPC4000 have IDE drives that could be replaced with IDE to SD converters. That could be done with an MPC5000 as well but there's no need because it already has a CF reader.

Re: Your Favorite Acquisitions in 2020

I guess you could call this an MPC9000, an Akai MPC5000 and an Akai Z8. I got the Z8 in April, the MPC5000 in May. Both required some work when I got them, the Z8 had a burnt out display and the MPC needed to have the solder joints on the power supply reflowed. Upgraded both with SSDs using IDE to S...

Re: Oberheim Xpander and modern analogue synths

It's always good to order spare parts and have them on hand. Mouser is a good source along with Digi-key. I always order more than I'm actually going to use. I have two badly distorted voices on my Studio 440 and several other issues. I've already figured out that it isn't the rare and expensive 338...

Re: Oberheim Xpander and modern analogue synths

I would study the service manual thoroughly before I opened it up and desoldered any caps. The more you understand how something works, the better chance you have to diagnose and fix it. With something as rare and valuable as the Xpander, a kid glove approach is recommended. When you do open it up, ...

Re: Oberheim Xpander and modern analogue synths

I've never had that sort of problem with my Xpander but from the description it could be a failure of the sample and hold for that voice. I just took a quick look at the service manual and the control voltages are put on the VCOs and VCFs with a sample and hold circuit which is the way polyphonic sy...

Re: Do high end mixers matter?

So basically high end mixers don't matter for electronic music then? There's no yes or no answer for that. There are so many different ways of doing electronic music that there is no one size fits all solution. What I get from a lot of the replies here is that there are many out there that aren't e...

Re: Do high end mixers matter?

All very interesting! Cani ask though what the difference in "live recording" and a synth is? Frequency wise they're going to be similar, and if anything a synth sound, say a pad or FM patch may be far more complex with more going on in the spectrum. so is it more of a dynamics thing, catching nuan...

Re: Do high end mixers matter?

Chris of Learning Modular gave a pretty reasonable sounding explanation for why you might want to go 96 KHz. I'm just trying to paraphrase, so please correct if anything here sounds wrong. The issue, according to this explanation, is the filtering required to avoid aliasing. Assuming you want to ca...

Re: Oberheim Xpander and modern analogue synths

No one's mentioned the tracking generators, for me they are the real joker in the pack. Lots of my patches have release times that extend further up the keyboard or oscillator tunings that diverge progressively. If you want it non-linear so it only kicks in properly in the top two octaves or someth...
