The ones I return to the most, and the starred ones are my faves of these: A6 Quantizer — simple and handy *B4 Clockable Delay D1 DJ Filter F5 Shift Register (random cvs) — convenient to have built-in slew H2 Dual S&H *I7 Dual Sample Player *K1 Wavetable VCO (and curious to try the other wavetable a...

Re: Generative modules for 7u 104hp
If you had a really tiny case, the desert island generative module would probably be Sample & Hold. There’s just so many creative ways to patch up cool things with S&H. But ultimately, my advice for generative is that no matter what you pick, choose the modules with the most voltage control. The mo...

Re: Your unusual approach to modular!
My approach to modular is pretty open-ended, and the gear is set up to promote that: Make it easy to reconfigure everything. Opt for multiple, smaller cases that can be self-contained, and work well with the others. Use Knurlies or similar to make it easy to swap modules around. Have more ribbon cab...

Re: U-He CVlization
The demos have me intrigued on this one, along with Starthief’s experiences he’s shared so far. I am getting my feet wet with a A-138m (on its way)—down the road (once my head is a bit more wrapped around matrix mixing) I could see diving deeper with a multimode matrix module the CVIization. Looks f...

Re: Looking for crappy music
Not crappy by any stretch - but definitely creatively mixed. Love this track - absolutely detonates heads on a big system:) https://youtu.be/rtBAtsbFbOY Great track, that saturated distortion bass whomping is super satisfying. A few more artists that stand out for me, with crappy-ish aspects of pro...

Re: MakeNoise Mimeophon
I have experienced occasional clicks in the past while using the Mimeophon near the end of the chain. Not sure I can identify a pattern (with my particular module). I have noticed it a couple of times when there were clock/trigs sent to the Flip and/or Hold inputs. It had been racked next to a Dist...

Re: Beginner Skiff Set-Up Advice
Generally looks like a pretty good starting point overall, and I agree with Shakespeare on trading Rings for Pamela’s New Workout. Maths and Plaits and Pam’s are a great trio. You could start there (plus a vca) and have plenty to work with for awhile. I would also echo the advice of having a cascadi...

Re: Looking for crappy music
Hype Williams (the band), black dice, matrix metals. This guy nacho marty on YouTube does some great synth demo tracks that have an ineffable lo fi mystique I find really compelling. Hmm. I'll try to think of more Hype Williams (Dean Blunt / Inga Copeland) for sure. It always sounds so crappily goo...

Re: Gooey sticky fuzzy distortion
I’m far from a distortion connoisseur, but “gooey” makes me think of filters, and distortion+filter makes me think of WMD TRSHMSTR. Which is a great a pretty versatile module. Same here, currently getting in this sonic ballpark when routing audio through an overdriven VCA > Belgrad > Stereo FX modu...

Re: Alternative to Make Noise Blued Steel Stand?
The on-stage mix400 mixer stand has been working pretty well on my end, it fits up to 104hp wide, and 6u. I might be able to do 9u but not exactly sure. This may not be right for you, but it is a bit cheaper than the blue steel stand and likely easier to find in stock.

Re: Patching question (ambient)
It's up to you whether LFOs follow a clock or run free. Try both out and see what works best for any given patch. LFOs *are* oscillators, just below audio rate, and behave exactly the same. They be free-running, clocked, and triggered (reset), depending on the features of a given module. Attached a ...

Re: Sequencer less than 30hp?
Voltage block is awesome in being 8 channels of 16 steps in 20hp and is rather simplistic overall. However I find fiddling with it on the sliders for adjusting the notes is pretty annoying for dialing in sequences, and generally use it for CV modulation (which is primarily what I intended with it a...

Re: Patching question (ambient)
It sounds like you're interested in patching subtle/evolving modulation as a means to bring some animation to a sound — that about right? There are many ways to do this. Mixing multiple, slow LFOs is one way. ochd is a module that is designed with this (among others) in mind. Triple Sloths, too. Bas...

Re: What is the most random, random-generator still in production?
. . . For me personally, by the time I've constrained randomness enough to find the results musical, any difference is completely overwhelmed by the constraints, the use of repetition to make random sound intentional and meaningful (and not random any more), quantisation etc... Pure randomness is l...

Re: Modern Cassette Recorders
I had reasonably good luck with a basic, still-functioning (and recording) Technics deck via ebay. Moving forward—and factoring cost inflation—I’d be more likely to get a deck that has been serviced recently, either directly from a used stereo equipment store or from a specialist/tech seller on Reve...

Re: Cosmotronic Thru Zero Complex Oscillator - Teaser
Very nice panel layout + UI — looks like a quick study and hearing lots of interesting sound design possibilities. For a name—I wonder if the two VCOs each having a distinct personality (vs pre-configured in car/mod relationship) might lead somewhere. One idea that popped up is the idea of two plane...

Re: Self generating patches....tips and ideas ?
Thanks for sharing that patch, Luke, I think I'll go back and try adding in a S&H. I did a quick patch based on this and got some semi-random, semi-farty pulse chaos happening. By patching the high-passed square wave back into the oscillator's v/oct input, and multing the square wave to the exponent...

Re: How did you pick your sequencer?
I bought a Varigate 4+ because I watched a video of how it worked and i thought it was very intuitive and i liked how it operated. I planned to use the 2 CV outs for melodies/basslines, and 2 of the Gate outs for drums. I just learned that for the sequencer to work properly, you need to patch CV in...

Re: Seeking oddish timbres
Lots of good feedback shared above. I’d add one more way to explore timbres (akin to crossfaders and matrix mixers) is with a joystick controller (or other gestural/macro controllers). Map it to a handful of disparate parameters in the patch—particularly ones that are multed to several other destina...

A-110-4 QZVCO — enjoying this in particular for percussive sounds and rubbery, staccato, atonal melodic patterns. Bonus points for the charming blue panel with white/blue LEDs.
A-151 Quad sequential switch — incredibly useful, compact, expands any patch.
