Coming from someone who makes a lot of semi-ambient semi-modular self-generating music, I would advise you to make sure you have enough modulation and enough attenuverters/mixers to control said modulation. Personally I like modules that are very, very flexible - for example, I have a small (9U 60hp...

043//Old Heroes - cinematic, self-generating M32 w/STO

I finally got a quantiser! Pretty amazing I haven't got one yet, considering how long I've been making self-generating music.

042//Daydream on a Train - a mini modular homage to Reich

Haven't made a video in a very long time, so thought I might start up again. This is a driven, semi-self-generating homage patch to Steve Reich's 'Different Trains', using a Moog Mother 32 and some modules sent through an Eventide Space shimmer reverb and a...

You are downsizing, what are you keeping and whats going? What was your feeling for going smaller? A few reasons: - I now have a nice non-modular Moog synth, so I want to change my modular to being less AJH/Moog and more varied - I need some money so I'm selling off some modules - I love the ergono...

Good to know people are still enjoying this video!

I'm in the middle of switching out half of my rack and downsizing back to the 60hp 9U Moog rack, but both Maths are staying and they're still incredibly useful.

Being able to add extra modules when you think 'if only I had 1 more LFO' or whatever is exactly what drew me from hardwired synths to modular in the first place! Just think how restricted you'd be if your setup wasn't modular...

I multitracked Mother 32s to get an ambient sci-fi journey

A melodic semi-self-generating patch using 2 tracks of 2 Mother 32s sent through an Eventide Space reverb and an Eventide Timefactor. I usually don't multitrack as I like to use the gear 'as-is', but for this patch I couldn't help but multitrack to add more...

040//Cold Star - Moog Mother 32 + pedals self-gen patch

A semi-self-generating patch using 2 Mother 32s sent through an Eventide Space reverse reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on tape setting. Can a patch made on such a small setup be 'uncomfortable'? In this patch I tested how unnerving I could make a patch, u...

I don't believe it records pitch bends - the closest you'll get without external gear is is glides between steps. Otherwise, you need to send it MIDI and take the mod wheel CV from the Assign output. Not sure about whether it would record microtonal pitches, but if you can test it I'd be very glad t...

Took music technology A level, now going to university to study sound technology. Was introduced to modular as a 'this exists but we aren't covering it in the course', got hooked by the idea of building a personal custom synth out of individual modules. No regrets!

Does patching output to output cause any damage that might build up over time, opposed to instantly creating magic smoke? Perhaps patching 2 outputs together once by accident and then quickly unpatching will do nothing, but doing it for an extended period of time, multiple times, eventually leads to...

I learned softsynths, followed by a secondhand Microbrute, followed by a secondhand Mother 32, followed by modules. Each step from softsynths > analog hardware > modular took quite a bit of getting used to, but practice and modular youtube tutorials helped a lot.

038//Bells of the Abyss - Mother 32/Eventide Space drone

After a drought of drone-like patches, I turned my reverb mix up to 100% wet and let the bells toll away. This may not be the most complicated of my patches, but it doesn’t need to be to successfully create a deep, unnerving atmosphere. As always, patch not...

For a quick fix, have a look at your instrument`s voice settings. Reaktor allocates all voices at once, so if your synth is intended to be monophonic, set number of voices to 1 and save a lot of CPU load. From a quick view, your oscillators seem to drain most of the processing power. Your "basic os...

So I have this exact same problem. My synth SHOULD NOT be eating the CPU so much. I debug and I know exactly what is eating the CPU, but at the same time it SHOULDN'T. Is there a way to complie an ensemble so it's efficient? What's eating the CPU in your ensemble? I don't know how to debug so I can...

Massive CPU load on Reaktor ensemble?

I've been playing around with Reaktor, trying to make my own synth, and I've made a basic one (1 oscillator based on harmonics, 1 basic waveforms oscillator, noise, a filter, envelopes/LFOs, etc). For some reason the CPU load is really high - almost 40% for me when I use this in Ableton. Meanwhile, ...

036//Rainforest Nights - 2x Moog Mother 32 atmosphere

Returning to using clicks and pops for creating self-generating atmospheres, I decided to put my 2 pedals through their paces. Glitchy clicks and self-oscillating filters feed into a warbling delay and modulated reverb for a richly textured forest soundscape.
