Re: How Do I Choose A New Interface?

How are you feeling about your choice now that you've been using it for a few months? Audio quality is great. Latency over thunderbolt is great. I don't really like using a software routing matrix, but it's tolerable. I don't use any of the Antelope plugins or software. It's completely adequate for...

You tune the oscillators, either by ear or with a tuner, before you begin sequencing.

Re: Moog Mother 32/Subharmonican/DFAM, as the center pieces of a Eurorack?

I'll add here that, like the venerable luketeaford, I also have a DFAM (and probably tomorrow will have a Subharmonicon delivered) which I use very comfortably alongside about 100hp of VCAs, comparators, logic, utilities, etc. So it's not really an either or, necessarily.

You probably won't learn about synthesis in the same deep way you would by building sounds out of basic building blocks, but you'd have a lot of functionality. For the money, yeah, you could do worse.

Yep. I've been using a live processing rig for shows with my band and it hasn't really changed in a year or more. Except the X-Pan, I guess.

That was one of the most fantastic and magical synthesizer performances I have ever seen. Cheers, papz, and cheers to all involved. Amazing! :)

Set the Mod Osc keyboard switch to In and connect 218 main to 208 voltage, then trim to taste.

Re: Buchla 208r Screw-up. Oops.

Thank you, guys. Boops made some good suggestions for how to troubleshoot the power board. It was working fine before. May have just accidentally shorted something without noticing it. But I really appreciate all the help here. This community is really awesome and I'm glad to be a part of it.

Re: Buchla 208r Screw-up. Oops.

Woah... I just tried this on a different power board and everything works fine...?

In my brand-new Boops boats, the oscillator issue persists. But in my old SAmodular case, everything is fine.

What could possibly cause this...?

Re: Buchla 208r Screw-up. Oops.

Yes, of course. And I was somewhat joking above -- I didn't flex the PCB itself, of course. Once I unsoldered the banana jacks from the top and removed all the nuts from the audio jacks (etc) there was plenty of room to get the switch out, just by lifting the front panel.

Re: Buchla 208r Screw-up. Oops.

Agreed with all the above. In my defense: once the switch broke my first thought was "Well -- guess I'm about to ruin a hundred hours of work trying to fix one switch," so I was, at least, mentally prepared for this outcome.

KSS, I grant you are right. Hm. While having my morning coffee I opened this back up and checked for shorts, bad solder joints... Nothing visible. Reseated the daughter boards... No change. Currently the lights for the "routing section" are always on, as if I've shorted the output of the oscs past t...

Re: Buchla 208r Screw-up. Oops.

Update:

Got the new switch soldered in. Trigger source now changes fine, however now I get constant tone from the oscillators regardless of how the mixer is set. Wow. I never imagined I would mess up something like that in this process.

Hm. It does seem a little flexible, actually. Maybe between gentle flexing and Peake's partial teardown suggestion this won't be so bad.

Thank you, guys.

Buchla 208r Screw-up. Oops.

I screwed up and broke one of the DPDT switches on my 208r -- the Trigger Source switch. I have another DPDT switch (same part no) in my parts bin but I'm looking at this and wondering: Is there an easier (smarter?) way to replace this switch than by unscrewing every nut off the main panel and pulli...

Re: Len Faki - BX3 - What is going on here?

When I listen closely and compare 1:20 to 3:15 I think you are right: there is also a slight change in the delay time, so that in later sections the delay is not quite as clean a subdivision of one beat, or half a beat, but somewhere in between. It does shift a bit. There is also a lot of frequency ...

Re: Len Faki - BX3 - What is going on here?

The main loop (the one that comes in at :46) starts on the "and" of the first beat of the measure, rather than on the downbeat, but it has a delay on it that is one "and" long, which means the delayed sound aligns with the downbeat. This makes a very cool and interesting feel, I agree.

You might find this thread on audio interfaces worth reading.

If you are concerned about Universal Audio plugins you can buy one of their DSP cards.

Not having the plugins tied to the interface you choose is a long term benefit.
Agreed. And yes, I use the UAD pci-e cards.

Re: How Do I Choose A New Interface?

Thanks for all the advice guys. A little update: I went with the Antelope Orion Studio. 12 ins, 16 outs. Wired it to a little patchbay. Hooked everything up. Figured out the routing system. Installed all the drivers and firmware. Gain staged my stuff. And so on. Everything is up and running now. It ...

Re: How Do I Choose A New Interface?

FWIW, I'm very happy with my Orion 32+. No issues whatsoever and I really like the sound. The routing matrix is also pretty cool. Does anyone have experience to back up BT's claim that audio interfaces sound WILDLY different. I'm not buying it. I made some comparison files when I upgraded from my o...

Re: How Do I Choose A New Interface?

Hm. It seems like people are pretty fond of these lynx modules... And voltcontrol -- thank you: knowing that they made dsub cables you can order right there on the site is really helpful. Wow. I provisionally put in an order for a used Antelope Orion -- it was for some reason insanely cheap at GC. I...

Re: How Do I Choose A New Interface?

The lynx looks great, and the last gen models seem affordable, but I don't understand the dsub connections on the back. You need to get custom dsub cables made, and plug those into a patchbay for in/out, or something like that?

Re: How Do I Choose A New Interface?

Hm. Thank you. That does sound like a promising option. And I guess it's looking like, no matter which way I slice it, I'm going to have to learn to build and use a patch bay. :)
