Re: Sample and Hold sag / pitch droop.

A quantizer is basically a sample and hold isn't it? Just with the samples quantized?

I have the 2hp sample and hold and it droops pretty badly. Often I use the Ornament and Crime quantizer for more varied sample and hold duties.

Re: List of Euro Oscillators that use the CEM 3340? And Knowledge

I'm pretty sure the Doepfer A111-3 uses it and therefore their quad precision oscillator as well, at least that circuit design is referenced in their documentation in regards to osc sync. I have the A111-3 as well as a Neutron. Personally I think the Neutron Oscillators sound really good 'raw', it's...

I use a Motu MIDI Express XT and it works great. Drivers and software haven't been updated for aeons which is a little worrying (and the configuration software is a little clunky), but I guess if it ain't broke...

Re: Starting with Eurorack

All well and good for pitch and gate but if you use the midi to CV converter to send midi CC then the resolution is 7 bits not 16bits. This is going to make your VCV LFO -> VCF sound like a zipper even if your midi to CV converter is 14bit or 16bit. True, though how much of a problem it actually is...

Re: Starting with Eurorack

Having Neutron, and another VCO-VCF-VCA in the same system, is it possible to sequence in separate voices via VCV? And how can I do it? An cheaper alternative to the Es8 would be a basic midi to CV converter box (or module). Pretty sure you could do it with a Korg SQ1 which is cheap as chips and al...

Re: Starting with Eurorack

I actually like the sound of the neutron filter, but you have to attenuate the oscillators first so you’re not pummeling it. I have tried hard to like it but I just can't - and I love distortion! Have tried attenuation and all the tricks. It always sounds kind of muffled/lo-fi to me (and not in a g...

Re: Starting with Eurorack

I would get a decent filter - it's the weakest link in the Neutron IMO. Even cheap-ish ones like the Doepfer SEM one or Ripples sound so much better. But... the Neutron is a great starting point. I had a Mother-32 which I replaced with a Neutron and don't regret it one bit - the patchbay has such a ...

The Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory can get extremely brutal. Unusably so in my opinion, sounds great when you find the sweet spot though.

Any pedal developed with Sun O))) must be worth a look, right?

Re: Analogue Studio Mixer - High Quality Sound, EQ and Build £500-£2000 ?

I was hunting for a cheap mixer few years ago and the only thing I could find that satisfied my requirements was a used Soundcraft Spirit M-12. Tape Op review here . I wanted something as 'analog' as possible (digital FX on cheap mixers are usually rubbish and I don't want to be paying for some kind...

Re: Intellijel Quad VCA

I want to send an LFO to my quantizer, can I use the level control of a channel of the Quad Vca as an offset for the LFO signal so that it only oscillates in the positive? No, because it amplifies the signal, it doesn't offset it. 2 * -1 = -2! You need one of the many utility modules with an offset...

Re: Smallest Analog LFO (VCOs?)

I think it's 4hp (not sure if that makes it to big) but the Doepfer A-111-3 is an excellent sounding, fully featured analog oscillator that tracks really well and will also operate in LFO mode.

MI Streams has lots of options for this kind of thing with two LPGs to boot, plus it's two channels so it will (kind of) do stereo.

£10 off ebay. Was local so I could pick it up. Very solidly built 19" plywood rack case with carry handle. Also included a homemade patchbay with over 70 1/4" jack sockets which appear to be decent quality (Clif). The patchbay is pretty much exactly what I needed for a DIY project in progress :yay: ...

Re: Friendly Rant on Lack of Vertical Case Designs

Just put a normal rack on its side 😁

I am only half joking - as stated above you'd get an awful lot of 'dead space' issues with really short racks.

Personally I can't see any issues with mounting bus boards vertically but you should watch the alignment of vents on your PSU.

Re: Envelopes vs. matrices - what would YOU do with your last 20HP?

Micro o_c running Piqued would give you four very flexible envelopes plus 12hp to play with - plus a whole lot more if you don't need the envelopes in a particular patch.

Re: What Type Of Wire?

I have been doing some reading and I'm getting the distinct impression that cat6 or even cat5 should be good enough for my needs.

Here is quite an interesting blog post that references using cat5 for mic level audio signals over extremely long runs with no appreciable deterioration in quality.

Re: What Type Of Wire?

Thanks, that's helpful! I hadn't thought about using networking cable for audio as it's so thin but I guess Doepfer use it for those 'connector' modules (or whatever they're called) and they're designed to run with relatively long cable lengths so it must be OK?

I use cheapo Hosa / Thomann cables and have had no issues with audio quality. I use those Thomann looms for longer runs (3-5m) and they really help to keep things tidy. I do use balanced cables though, if the device I'm connecting to supports it. And I use good quality cabling for instrument level s...

Re: Will I miss Maths?

Maths blocks retriggering; if an envelope hasn't finished its fall cycle then new triggers won't cause the envelope to restart. This isn't the same on every alternative. Rampage for instance will re-trigger on the fall cycle (but not on rise). DUSG and Falistri both block retriggering completely ii...

Re: Sherman Filterbank trouble

I just got a second chance ebay offer on a Sherman Filterbank 1 being sold as non working - the price is around half of what they’d usually go for. I always look at 'second chance offers' with a large degree of scepticism. Often means seller put on fake bids and the price didn't reach their target....
