Re: Balanced TRS Output module in 5U?

It's not going to hurt anything to try it and see if the hum disappears. Get a cheap oscope and a couple BNC to TS cables and check it out, scopes are cool and are a lot less complicated than a lot of people seem to think. You can figure one out by playing with it for a few days. It's really cool to...

Re: Balanced TRS Output module in 5U?

A balanced input takes the difference between the two voltages whatever they are. There is nothing to be gained in having a balanced output if the cable screen is incorrectly connected to the module 0V. What I see in my system is that there's some identical noise in both the + and - outputs relativ...

Re: Balanced TRS Output module in 5U?

Yeah, big disclaimer: I only export audio to a recording device and not to live environments so take the +/- advice with a grain of salt, but it usually works for reducing noise in that environment induced between the output (the q108 in my example) and the input (a recording device or mixer) when p...

Re: Balanced TRS Output module in 5U?

You could use an insert cable in the + and - outputs of a Dotcom Q108. That will give you an audio signal and an inverted audio signal to a TRS plug, which should be the same as a balanced output

brokenswitch.jpg This is a Moon module, which solders the front panel components to the PCB. See the switch on the far right, with the plunger broken off? It's not fixed because it's a Moon module, which solders the front panel components to the PCB. Taking it apart and fixing the problem is obnoxi...

Re: What tools do I need to test a module after building it?

power supply, multimeter, oscope, some alligator clips, and a sacrificial voltage-controlled oscillator that you can fix or replace if it gets fried so you can make sure your module behaves the way it should without plugging it into your big expensive monster synth and letting the magic smoke out

Re: De soldering irons

I've got the hakko FR-301, it's excellent. Used it on some vintage computers to perform some serious repairs, desoldered CPUs and RAM and ROM and all kinds of stuff. It's basically the best option for that kind of work. There are also some cheaper chinese desoldering guns that have some good reviews...

Re: Acceptable internal case temperature? (eurorack)

I think I might know what you're talking about. I've seen switching supplies with multiple rails (+5V, +/-12V) experience bad behavior if one of the rails is underutilized. Like if you don't put some amount of load on the +12V but you run 75% of +5V current, then the +5V is really dirty and the powe...

Re: Quadraphonic sound in MU format

I can already do some quadraphonic output if I want to. If you have 4 VCAs you can set them up so that a sine wave and a 90° sine wave are controlling their output levels like: 0°+ 90°+ 0°- 90°- and patch the same audio signal(s) to all 4. For control you could use a slow LFO or a joystick. I use a ...

Re: Obsessing about MIDI latency and jitter

Even an Atari is not the answer as anybody who used Cubase back in the day can tell you, don't touch the keyboard while printing tracks to tape! the keyboard on the Atari (actually the ikbd serial port, through which the keyboard communicates) shares an interrupt with the physical MIDI port on the ...

Re: Case Study Poll for moog format users

I think any monitor will work for high-res (black and white) mode. Widescreen monitors work particularly well. If you want to use the low or medium res color modes, that's when you want to go for the special 15khz monitor. These are Benq BL702A if I remember right. The power supplies on those old sy...

Re: Case Study Poll for moog format users

Hi, what are those black squares over the atari & c64(?), monitors? Atari and Amiga, the c64 is on the far right. Yep, those are special monitors that can sync with old 15khz rgb inputs. The Amiga is for sampling / tracking and the Atari runs the DAW (Cubase) that controls all the synthesizers. The...
