Re: Entry 5U System
I started 16 years ago with the dotcom entry level system and I would recommend it. It's $1700 and has plenty of room for expansion. https://synthesizers.com/system-entry2.html My system has now grown to 90 spaces over 3 cabinets (one of them the one that the entry system came in), with modules from...

Re: The CD/LP buying thread.
Got a $100 Amazon gift card from my credit card company and blew it (and some more) on CDs. Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 Eminem - Music To Be Murdered By (took a small risk with this one since I haven't really liked anything after The Marshall Mathers album, but it's actually pretty go...

Re: Recommend a reverb unit (rack or pedal) for ambient?
Eventide Blackhole. I'm using it right now with my eurorack and it's magic. Instant ambient. Of course, the Space or H9 would also be good choices, but I like the simpler interface of the Blackhole and it does exactly what you describe: long droney reverbs that can be brought to the forefront in the...

Re: Nord Stage 3 and eurorack ??
A different "workflow" could be to patch up a sequence in the modular, and then improvise with the Stage 3 over it, while doing eventual tweaks to the sequence. If you want to do tonal/harmonic stuff, you could use a small controller, like a KeyStep, to transpose the sequences or trigger different s...

Re: Writings on mathematical approach to sound
Musimathics volume 1 and 2. There might be some math in Curtis Roads' The Computer Music Tutorial but I don't recall that much... excellent book anyway. Second this. The Musimathics books were a total eye opener for me. Definitely. This should be the starting point. Other reads that could be useful...

Re: Ensoniq Lovers Unite
I feel the same way about the DP4--prices on them have gone sky high. I'm tempted to sell mine (bought a few years ago for $125). They have some great sounds, but not $1000+, plus, while my studio is mostly hardware, I haven't integrated hardware effects very well. I had a similar experience ~5 yea...

Re: Ensoniq Lovers Unite
What a coincidence. Just yesterday I pulled my SQ-80 out of storage and even used it to record something I needed for a track. It is my oldest synth by far. This is my second SQ-80 and I've also owned an ESQ-1. They're great synths and very easy to program, but they also take too much space. I'm alw...

Re: Nord Stage 3 and eurorack ??
But all that aside...... if you have ever had private-time with a full-size keyboard that sounded like real piano (or WAS a realpiano)..... then you might know what it is like. My wife has an acoustic upright and I have a Nord Electro 4D. There is simply no comparison when it comes to sound, feel o...

Re: Your Favorite Acquisitions in 2020
2020 was pedal year for me. Finally got the Moog MF-101 and MF-102 moogerfoogers to complement my MF-103. They are both great and even better when used together. Also, finally got into Eventide. Bought the Rose and Blackhole pedals. Both amazing. Didn't get any new synths (that is this year's goal),...

Re: Nord Stage 3 and eurorack ??
I don't have a Nord Stage but I have a Nord Electro 4D (even though I'm no keyboardist), a Rack 2X and a Nord Drum. Also used to own a NL3, Modular G2 and a couple MicroModulars. Currently considering buying an A1 this year. Nords are great. Anyway, I own a FutureRetro Mobius, which is what I use wh...

Re: center negative vs center positive
Glad you didn't fry it. I suppose most pedals include reverse polarity protection diodes, but one never knows. The question is not so much why a manufacturer would use center positive, but why wouldn't they print the fucking polarity icon (with the input voltage, for good measure) right on the pedal...

Re: center negative vs center positive
I bought quite a few pedals in the past two years. Some of them came with power supplies, others did not. Five of them are center-positive (3 foogers, EHX Clockworks and EHX Frequency Analyzer). But it's not just the polarity that can be different. Most use 9V but some use 12V, 18V or 40V (must use ...

Re: center negative vs center positive
Moogerfoogers are center positive. Don't know about minifoogers but I imagine they are as well. Just checked my Minifooger (Drive) pedal. It’s center negative. Wonder why the difference vs the foogers? I suppose the original foogers were aimed not only for guitarists but for synthesists as well, so...

Re: So, I accidentally bought a FR Orb
I have a Mobius and I really like how you can mess about with the sequencer while it's playing: changing sequence length, reverse, turning steps on and off, etc. It becomes an instrument in its own right. If the orb is modeled after the Revolution, then it probably has even more functions (remix or ...

Re: Stuffing the Dotcom 163 EuroRack Adapter?
I was (and still am) worried about the signal level difference between the euro and the 5U, which is why I decided to just do CV source. Do you have that problem with your modules? Not really. At least, it's not worse than differences between 5U/MU manufacturers. Actually, I've never had problems m...

Re: Sequencer less than 30hp?
I have a Xaoc Devices Moskwa (20 hp) and I like it. It's pretty much what you describe: simple 8-step analog sequencer with one knob and one trigger switch per step. It also has knobs for speed (clock rate), sequence length, and slew rate, plus a mode switch (forward, random, pendulum). It also has ...

Another vote for Nord Leads, particularly the NL3. I've owned the MS2000R (three of them, actually), Virus B, Roland JP8000 and Novation Nova, Waldorf XT. Then I bought a NL3 and eventually sold the rest; the interface and versatility were simply amazing. I really want to get another one someday. I ...

A modern cassette recorder is a computer. I honestly have no idea why you want to use a medium those of us who had no choice were glad to see the end of, other than some kind of misplaced borrowed nostalgia. I know this won't be a popular post. Because, as your own post suggests, it's very differen...

Re: Novation Circuit Rhythm Sampler
Interesting. I wonder how it compares to the electribe sampler. I've owned a regular Circuit and an ES-1. The circuit has much better sample quality and effects. The ES-1 has a better UI but IMO it sounded flat and lifeless. I have heard no better from the Volca Sample. I'm more interested in a Cir...
