Re: Mixing console from modules - possible?

I just got a used Ashly MM 508 which sounds like it would be ideal for your setup. The MX508 is the same thing. I got mine used on ebay for $250- which is an absolute steal considering the sound and quality of this thing. Great pres and line drivers and transformers on the outputs!

I’m looking at building a completely off the grid home utilizing shipping containers at some point in the next 5 years... and was worried about my studio. It would require a separate container for sure. Seeing that this is a doable thing, it makes me smile. Would love to chat more in detail about t...

Well, after 6 months, I am happy to report that everything is going way better than anticipated. Ive been testing in the main house before building the detached studio, and have really been surprised with how well the solar works. We have 3.6kw of panels and 8 large 12v batteries. Theres a propane g...

I really like to get everything going live, so I'll get all my synths doing their thing and then slap a reverb or delay across everything just to give me a feel. I multitrack record each individual sound so I dont have to obsess about the mix or fx yet. Personally, I find this gives me a clearer sen...

There is a ton of opportunity in producing new 200 oscillators. The 258 and 259 variants seem relatively well covered. It might be nice to look at some other circuits that already exist and port them over to the 200. Like what they did with the DAO (MI Braids in 200 format). The J3rk Ultrafade Oscil...

The 200e USB firmware card can also act as a MIDI interface for the 200e. Not as full featured as the 225, but it doesn't take any rack space, and is a useful enough thing to have anyway.

Maybe try that first and see how far it gets you?

Well, you have a number of memory locations for sequences, and you can switch between them as the sequence is playing.

Well, I've never used the Pyramid, but the Schrittmacher is one of my favorite sequencers. I eventually sold it because I just don't have enough MIDI gear, but if you're looking for an improvised performance sequencer, I think it's hard to beat. Something like the Engine is way superior for "composi...

Agree with the above... I dont think a quantizer is what you want. Some kind of cv-addressable sequencer, like the Buchla 251e, would be perfect for this. I believe there are several euro modules with this functionality as well. You could tune each step to the exact interval you want and then use a ...

I've committed to doing it at this point... going completely off grid in the spring. Some of my more power-hungry outboard may have to hit the road, but I'll be sure to update with my progress!

Interesting... thanks for all the input! I've measured my studio, when everything is on, at around .6 kwh per hour of use (with monitors and computer on as well as synths and outboard). If I use it for roughly 40 hours a week, that's only 96 kwh per month. Wouldn't a 2kw system with batteries, in an...

Solar powered studio?

I'm looking to build an off-grid studio, and was curious if anyone here has done it?
I've been starting to monitor my studio power usage to get an idea of what size system I would need, but I would love to hear experiences with purely solar powered studios.

I would heartily recommend the Orville. I cant imagine life without it. If you're patient, you can find good deals on it used. Super flexible with i/o, sounds as good as anything out there imo.

I don't have any recordings finished to share, but I'm mostly experimenting with Pythagorean temperament, Solfeggio frequencies, and things like that.

Synths/keyboards which can tune every key?

I have had a lot of fun playing with some very specific tunings on my Rhodes, and am trying to identify other instruments I could do this with. Obviously, using modulars and analog sequencers is one option... but what about self-contained instruments? So far, I've only found the Korg PS-3100/3200/33...

The other posters are right. I've also found you will get better results quantizing after the s+h, but in this case, you would then need two quantizers. Many s+h circuits have a certain amount of voltage drop, depending on the design.

That could be a casiotone through a bunch of pedals, or a vintage moog modular with a bunch of eventides :-)

It is beautiful, whatever it is, but I would say it has more to do with processing and mixing than synthesis.

I've been looking into pro audio-esque modules, and I've built a few preamps. Thinking about something with faders and panners, but you have to realise it all adds up. The circuit blocks themselves are a lot simpler than most diy synth circuits, it is just that you need a fuckton of them. And if yo...
