Any VCA that doesn't go beyond a gain factor of 1 is NOT an amplifier, but an attenuator only. This gets mixed up frequently, but as long as one doesn't understand the difference, discussing the reasons for sonic characteristics of VCAs is a bit like comparing gears to brakes on a bike. Some instanc...

An envelope's range won't change much if at all when the slope shape is bent by feedback. Regarding VCAs, speaking for the Wiard Mixolator and I believe also the Malekko XMIX, the range doesn't change when the response is changed from lin to log, probably because they are wired as cross-panners base...

LPGs don't just differ in that they respond slowly and feature filtering, which can be switched off with some, but the optocouplers in their signal path also eliminate the thumping that analog VCAs exhibit more or less when opened with a fast Attack. Regarding coloration, there are several factors t...

I forgot about voltage controlled panning in quad or surround settings. You can control the amplitude, lowpass filtering and dry/ wet mix of up to eight channels with the JAG's numbered outputs, and you can use the Dome output to help simulate the pitch shift caused by a sound source's acceleration ...

If you have the 311C or any other quadrature LFO, run the 0 and 90 degree outputs into X and Y for a nice... circling light ;-) Run two audio waveforms or one audio and one subaudio waveform into it for different waveshaping effects depending on each output jack. Run envelopes, LFOs or the Sequantiz...

So, other factors in a module aside, the lifespan of a vactrol based module seems to depend a) on how often and how long per session it's used and b) on the long-term accumulated brightness = filter frequency as well as the tempo of your CV changes that control the module, practically speaking. I d...

Capacitors and LEDs age differently. Optocouplers are based on an LED and a photocell that are housed in a light proof enclosure. As you probably know, the more an LED is used, the sooner it starts to dim - eventually, possibly after decades. If my memory serves, this applies both in terms of time a...

...Another idea is to "thin" your patch at the mixing stage, not in the patch itself. Equalizing (both absolute and with consideration as to the other, "competing" audio tracks) is generally underestimated as a factor in making a patch (or any recording track) sound "great" as opposed to "okay", and...

Re: Quad HPF??

Anyone know of a quad HPF in Eurorack? Ideally what I'd like is something super simple in as small a module as possible. I keep finding myself wanting to thin out the output of Morphagene or Clouds but don't want to use up my other filters. It could be as simple as 4 inputs, 4 frequency knobs and 4...

Found my way back to patch Nr. 1. What you're mentioning is part of it, but what I had been overlooking was the need to pull up the inverted gate signal that goes into AMOD so that it's zero when the gate source is on and a positive voltage when the gate source is off. Simple maths. And the Wiard co...

Two classic patching tips I do remember from that context: 3. Modifying an external clock signal's pulse width - Patch the clock or gate signal into an Envelator's gate input. - Set mode to AD. - Set Decay time to minimum. - Use the SQR output as your new clock, gate or trigger signal. - Vary Attack...

Advanced Envelator patches

Does anyone know the patches that simulate either or both of the following behaviours in the Envelator? 1. Retrigger during the Attack stage 2. Reset to zero Volts upon the transition from the active Decay stage to a new Attack stage (so that the Attack stage starts from zero, not from the level of ...

Robin's writeup is 19 years old. Back then "modular synths" to most people meant Moog, ARP or Doepfer (a budding Doepfer, not today's million-module mammoth). The only envelope module with voltage controlled decay time available at that time was the Serge/ STS Universal Slope Generator. And there w...

All guitars basically sound the same. It is how you treat, or mis-treat them that gives the differences that sets apart every rock genre from each other and from folk and country and every other type of music that uses guitars. Everyone with a Stratocaster sound the same? Everyone with a Les Paul? ...

Add clipping and/ or FM and/ or subharmonics. Adding a low (as in approaching subsonic) frequency element is key. The usual formants are not enough. You need to emulate that heightened and somewhat chaotic friction that distinguishes screaming from loud calling or singing.

Magic ingredient, not regarded as highly in electronic circles as in players of instruments: "practice" I've practiced memorizing & recalling patches by starting to do so with simple patches, then when I've done that a nauseating number of times, intermediate patches, etc. Sure, it's intrinsic to sy...

Apparently that (generosity) is wildly out of fashion.

It's so nice that Germany has caught up on Buchla & Serge. 10-12 years ago people still had that mindset that analog sequencers were invented by Moog and greatly refined by SSB, when actually the whole scene was years behind on (and apparently oblivious to) the American scene.
