Just wondering which ones we all use. I use two very different units - Roland CR-78 and a Yamaha RX-5. The CR-78 was maybe the first unit to be programmable. Maybe the first to have so many Ins/Outs. The RX-5 was from the Yamaha 80's stable of popular instruments and is nice because it has so many individual outputs.
CR-78:
Use for synthetic classic drum box rhythms.
Process as a synth voice through the modular.
Isolate sounds with the voice switches (sometimes to process).
Doepfer A-119 is a friend of this one... trigger and process.
RX-5:
To process the output through effects or the modular (w Doepfer A-119)as a voice.
To use the individual outs as a trigger source.
I have not used this as a stand alone drum machine yet. I would just use real drums for that.
edit - fixed a typo

I love drum machines... my quest for drum machine perfection ended with the combination of machinedrum UW and jomox xbase 09: They cover pretty much all of the ground Im after. Still...
Funnily enough I scored an RX5 today, mainly to use as a clock/trigger source though Im hoping its quantatisation and some of the sounds might be useful for me too. Having issues with it currently though hoping it nothing serious.
I added an Akai S900 with trigger ins last week too which Im really pleased about; means I can have the modular firing out triggers to that once everything is up and running. It also spits those triggers out as midi data too so things should get very cool.
In other percussive related news I was playing a friends modded CR8000 yesterday... that was pretty nice though I wasnt sure about the snare on it...possibly a mod mistake.
So, drum machines... love them! _________________ www.soundcloud.com/tib |

all i use now is a TR-606. i have an RX5 that is missing the power supply and sitting in my "closet of things i need to sell." had a machinedrum that was stolen from me when someone broke into my house a few months back (i was just getting into it to, using it to trigger the modular, pretty cool machine even if it does sound like a machinedrum, hehe). at some point i want to put together a 6U percussion modular. _________________ "fuck, if there is'nt an emoticon with a huge cock standing this could be the right time!" - Mr White

I have a TR-707, RX5 (seems popular around these parts!), E-mu MP-7 and Pro\Cussion. I haven't tried the Clock out of the RX5 into the modular yet though. I'm waiting on getting an A-160 before i go that route. I found an Alesis HR-16B locally for $40 that i'll probably pick up soon as well. _________________ Synths: SH-101 . TB-303 . x0xb0x . I have a TR-707 and I love it to bits. I kinda hate that it's become the machine that people want to circuit bend and fuck up, though. Great interface, highly playable live.
I'd like to get a MD, but I kind of think it'd take over my life.
Next up, though, is an R8. _________________

I loved my 707 too, though had to sell it before I moved overseas... when I arrived here they had 2 in a second hand shop; I could have had both of them for less than I sold my old one for. shouldve bagged one but didn't: great box and really punchy- complemented the jomox really well too... I'd like another but they're a bit pricey now.
other drummers I sold before the move were korg er1 and quasimidi 309... both good boxes in there own way... the er1 is great for blippy stuff, can get pretty big when layering sounds. the 309 found big very easy though was a bit buggy and fussy to program. well worth a look if one comes around cheap though.
pleased to report the rx5 is up and running... got to love that pitch bend thing. I can't understand why anyone would bend that: it can sound bent really easily as it is! _________________ www.soundcloud.com/tib |

Machinedrum
Korg ER-1
KPR-77
DR-110
DR-202
Also Korg Wavedrum.
I also have two software drum machines I like a lot- Sonic Sidekick Extreme Drumsynth, and the new Imageline Drumaxx. But one of my favorite activities is patching my own drum sounds on the euro modular and sampling them for use in Native Instruments Battery. |

Love drum machines..... I only have a TR-606 and a circuit bent HR-16. I'm in the process of making a midi to din synch cable so I can use silentway to clock the 606, then midi out of the daw to sync the HR-16. Having those two in sync with the daw would be a big WIN for me, then having the trigger outs of the 606 clock the modular |

My current drum machines:
DR-110 with an accent trigger to MIDI clock adapter I hacked together
DR-202
Yamaha RY10 (love this one, but it's starting to fail on me...)
Yamaha DD5
Synsonics Drums
and an MXR 185 Drumcomputer that's mostly gathering dust until I get around to fixing it up.
I've also made my down payment for the current MB808 run, so hopefully I'll have that going later this year _________________ http://glacialcommunications.com

I just can't seem to get on well with drum machines. Maybe because I'm a recovering drummer.
I've had:
--the Quasimidi 309 (tIB already gave the best description of it I've heard),
--the Jomox xBase09 (sounded fine, but didn't inspire me much)
--the Machinedrum (very cool, but gave me a headache),
--the MPC1K, (hated the pads, and these were the good ones)
--the Yamaha RS7K (if you enjoy gouging your eyes out, give this owner's manual a whirl)
--the Yamaha RY50 (rack version of the RY30)
--the Alesis D4 drum module (think 80's)
Currently I use the Roland Handsonic HDP-15, the Jomox Airbase99, NI Battery, Microtonic and Ultrabeat. Oh, and now my MOTM system.

korg er-1 mk2 to program a drumstation v2
tr-707
tr-606
tr-505
dr-110
sps-1 mk2 uw
mfb seq-01 to program an sdsv
emx-1
i really like all of these machines although the 606 gets the most love because of
- two trigger outs
- sick snare, hats and cymbal
the 606, 707, md and sdsv/seq-01 generally interact most with the modular and are very useful
i love the sound of the 707 in general. it seems to fit well into everything
im working out the drumstation right now because its the new kid but its sound is remarkably fat
the dr-110 is a bit useless as it doesnt sync to the outside world but the sound is fantastic. should mod it.
i got rid of my first MD but the UW capability gives it a new dimension and utility _________________ bandcamp

I use my TR-909, TR-808, TR-606 (modified) the most. I also have a TAMA TS-305 drum brain with a 2-voice rack (synth and clap), TR-727, TR-707 and TR-626.
I haven't ever felt like I needed anything that those boxes or a computer (with Ableton) couldn't do.
I owned a TBS DRM-1 as well and but I like the sound of the Tama better. _________________ My modular animal has awoken! |
