I was wondering on the back of the catalyst audio or any other red panel modules what the purpose of the jumpers was exactly...

I think they set the audio and CV levels to Euro or original Buchla levels.

Interesting!

Those boards are nicely laid out. I also notice they're using the J201 for sine shaping. Something that started I believe during some of the first 258 cloning work at Electro-Music way back when.

The J201's low Idss range (usually 0.2 -0.8) makes it perfect for the 158's triangle shaper which according to the schematic requires a selected 0.5 Idss E101, which are no longer available. The remaining J201 at smallbear are in this range and are fine. For a while they had higher-measuring 201s but they're now gone.

The 201s are acceptable for the 258 clones (sine shaper section) requiring a higher Idss, when they measure 0.8 or above.

Warning to people buying 2N4339 from ebay for Buchla builds...some less-expensive devices can be sub-standard and behave out-of-range.

I just can't help imagining that this would be better with vactrols

Thank you Dustin! I've built a lot of your boards over the years so thats nice to hear.

The J201's are the best thing available for the tri -> sin conversion at the moment. Unfortunately (in my experience) there is a LOT of variation in how well they work. I have just taken to purchasing a large amount of j201's off of various ebay sellers and then actually testing them individually in circuit to determine if they look/sound ok. I'd say on average only about 50% make the cut. Sometimes an entire bag is no good, sometimes 80% are good.

Also - just to confirm, yes the jumpers are to set the audio output level. Euro is in the 8v to 10v PP level, and Buchla is around the 1.5 to 2v PP level

Thanks a lot for this. Really enjoying the Catalyst and Red panel modules and having to think everything in a dual / stereo way.

Is there any plan to make the Red Panel Low/High Pass / Band Pass filter model 191 available anytime soon?

thanks

This is a bit curious: Buchla rather than Red Panel branding, though David refers to them as Red Panel in this post.

I wonder if they're just prototypes. I don't mind either look/name, but when I start picking them up I'd like them all to match. OCD intensifies =P

Much prefer this to the "Red Panel" that I had seen in other demos. This may just enable my dive into euro..

Buchla seems to be "on fire" at the moment. I'm so happy that Mr. Fox took the dive!

Could it be that they are finally realizing that hardly anyone liked that silly red panel logo. But I'm hoping they make the 4U versions properly and release them soon.

If Buchla make 4U proper 100 Series modules I sure hope they'll involve me at some level.
First off let me take the moment to say that I really respect your blog and the work that you have put into the 100. :hail:

You put this out there so I hope you don't mind the question: in what way would you like to see Buchla involve you in their endeavour?

Really out of curiosity and unknowingness, would they be using information that you made available on your blog?

Thanks to the mods for removing my self-pitying rant. This is Catalysts's thread, not mine.
